Reunion Island : Rallye des 1000km : Finish [10/12/01 - 15:08]

At the wheel of a Future World Toyota Corolla WRC, Malik Unia and Gilles Stasica won the Rallye des 1000 Km, last round of Reunion Island competition. Chaussalet was a distant second in an Impreza GT, while Maitre (Maxi Megane) was the top Formule 2 runner in third. With this crucial victory, Unia took Reunion rally title for second time. Belgian team Future World secured a new title after winning FIA West European rally cup, winning Belgian Division 1 championship… and a podium in Polish competition.

Friday evening, Unia set the pace on the opening two first special stages of 20 kilometres each. He was 45 seconds faster than Chaussalet and 46 seconds faster than Maitre. Saturday, Unia extended his leadership. Being the faster driver during the 12 special stages, Unia won the rally Sunday morning by a margin of 2'01" over Chaussalet and a margin of 5'02" over Maitre.

"This year, Future World run three national championships and – thanks to Malik Unia and Pieter Tsjoen – we've won two of them," smiled Team principal Gérard Magniette. "Before the rally, the team has worked very hard to find a perfect solution with suspension. Our work paid and Malik, driving perfect, has never been threaten by other drivers. To run so fast with a WRC, you'll have to be confident with our car. Malik was and he took the championship. So far from our Belgian base (9500 km), it's again a very good result for team Future World !"

In 2001 (30 races, 18 podiums and 10 wins), Antwerpen-based Future World has won two European Coef. 20 rallies and has secured FIA West European rally cup plus Belgian rally competition. Far from Europe, Future World and Toyota Sport La Reunion have won the local championship (5 podiums and 2 wins).
