The FIA Sportscar ‘awards'.

Rounding off 2001 for the FIA Sportscar championship is an often light-hearted look at the memorable moments of the season, with an ‘alternative' set of awards from the growing championship.

Best Qualifying Lap:Giovanni Lavaggi's at Spa if it had stood, otherwise Lammers last gasp pole lap at Mondello, "110% attack" as the man himself said. Also Guy Smith's pole lap at Monza was pretty awesome, especially as he also went on to the grass at the Parabolica.

Best Start: Jean Marc Gounon at Magny Cours. Around the outside from 4th on grid, edging Pescatori and Nielsen on to the grass. Pure 'racer' from the self styled sportscar bullet.

Best Passing Manoeuvre: Lupberger on Lavaggi at Monza. The Ferrari slipstreamed the Ascari, then Werner boxed Giovanni in as a GT car tried to stay out of the way at the Rettifilio. Pure opportunism.

Best Battle: Sam Hancock and Mauro Baldi at Brno. Wheel banging, multiple outbraking dice from two great racers at different ends of their careers.

Best Spin: Lavaggi's at Monza. Got craned out and then went on to drive the race of his life to make up 4 laps and win the race he has always wanted to win - the Monza 1000kms.

Best Shunt: Gounon's earth moving impact at Mondello. The lanky Frenchman threw a handful of mud and grass from the cockpit before alighting.

Best Quote: "I thought I was off to Paris." John Nielsen after experiencing a long brake pedal at the Adelaide Hairpin at Magny Cours.

Best Excuse: "I misjudged it by this much." (A remorseful Ben Collins measuring 2mm with his finger and thumb after wiping out the Renauer Tampolli at Barcelona on the pit straight.)

Best Comedy moment: "John Nielsen voicing concern that the Danish national anthem sounded a lot like the Swedish one on the podium at Brno."

SR2

Best Qualifying Lap: Massimo Monti's perfect lap at Magny Cours in July, half a second quicker than Bjork and O'Connell.

Best Start: Warren Carway's a la Ayrton Senna at Donington in 1993. Started 5th, finished first lap in the lead.

Best passing manoeuvre: Damien Faulkner's hairy dive up the inside of Carway at Mondello. Local knowledge comes good.

Best Battle: Although it was not on track, the Mondello SRTS v Rowan stop watch battle was fascinating.

Best Spin: Ollie Wilkinson at the exit of Redgate while the leader Val Hillebrand was about to lap him. Val took it cooly even though he could here the gasps from the pitlane.

Best Shunt: Without doubt Michael Mallock's large one at Eau Rouge. You don't have small ones there.

Best Quote: "We had a bit of a SNAFU on the wheel during the last stop." Larry Oberto at Donington!! Snafu is a US military term (situation normal all fouled up) or something like that!!

Best comedy moment: "Ian Flux at the post qualifying press conference after taking pole at Nurburgring. Sadly none of it is printable."
