Loix decision in the balance

A decision on Hyundai driver Freddy Loix’s participation in the Swedish Rally has been postponed until Friday, January 25.
The 31-year-old Belgian broke a bone in his left ankle when he crashed his Accent into a bridge on SS3 of the Monte Carlo Rally and although an operation last Saturday was deemed a success, a decision has been postponed from today, Wednesday. The Swedish begins on February 1.
“He’s in bed recovering. He won’t be testing,” a Hyundai spokeswoman declared.
It is not known if the Castrol-backed team will bring in a substitute driver if Loix isn’t fit enough to take part. It has two other drivers in any case, as Juha Kankkunen will join Armin Schwarz for the first time this year.

Freddy Loix heeft groen licht gekregen om volgende week deel te nemen aan de rally van Zweden, de tweede manche van het wereldkampioenschap. Loix kreeg de "go" van de medische dienst in Eeklo, die Loix behandeld heeft na zijn crash in de rally van Monte Carlo.
Maar dat betekent nog niet dat Freddy ook aan de start komt. Hij wacht de test af van overmorgen met de Hyundai Accent.
Loix: "Ik kom net van bij de dokter. Het ziet er vrij goed uit. Geen pijn meer en ik kan mijn voet toch al een paar centimeter plooien. Er zit ook nog een speciaal verband rond."
"Zondag ga ik met de auto testen en dan vooral mijn voet testen. Als ik voldoende gevoel heb in mijn voet, dan rij ik, anders niet. Ik wil ook Hyundai bedanken voor hun geduld. Ze zetten mij niet onder druk. Kan ik rijen, zoveel te beter, lukt het niet, dan op naar de volgende keer. Echt een goeie sfeer om in te werken. Nu, ik zie het wel zitten voor die test van zondag."
Precies een week geleden brak Fast Freddy een bot in zijn linkerenkel bij een ongeval met zijn Hyundai in de Monte Carlo. De dag erna werd Freddy al geopereerd in Eeklo. De Limburger kreeg een gips rond zijn geraakte voet en moest tot vandaag wachten op het verlossende nieuws.
Als Loix rijdt in Zweden, dan is Hyundai van de partij met 3 Accents. Loix en Armin Schwarz krijgen in de Zweedse sneeuw het gezelschap van witte specialist en viervoudig wereldkampioen Juha Kankkunen.

Ik ben er zeker van dat hij rijdt; elke echte piloot heeft die'n "drive".Ik ben ook wel eens benieuwd naar het resultaat.Iemand ne pronostiek?
Het staat nu zo goed als vast dat Freddy Loix deelneemt aan de rally van Zweden. Loix heeft vandaag een drietal uur getest in Zweden en zijn geopereerde voet heeft de test vlot doorstaan.
Freddy had geen pijn in zijn voet, na de test was er ook geen zwelling. De Limburger droeg wel een speciaal verband om zijn enkel extra bescherming en steun te bieden.
Loix krijgt uiteraard ook bijkomende massage van zijn kine, die vanavond nog vertrekt naar Zweden.
Tenzij er de komende dagen tijdens de verkenningen nog complicaties opduiken, komen Loix en co Sven Smeets vrijdag aan de start van de tweede manche voor het WK rally.
Loix moest vorige week zaterdag een kleine operatie ondergaan aan zijn linkerenkel om een gebroken bot te herstellen. Fast Freddy liep de breuk op bij een ongeval tijdens de rally van Monte Carlo.

Jongens, laat ons de verwachting voor Duval niet te hoog leggen eh...
Zoals in het interview te lezen staat :
"Ford is zich goed bewust van dit alles, en verwacht dan ook geen wonderen van hun piloot. De richtlijnen zijn duidelijk. "Ons objectief is van de wedstrijd uit te rijden, vertelt Jean-Marc Fortin (co-piloot van François), en men moet van ons geen tijden bij de besten verwachten. We moeten daar heel duidelijk in zijn, en het Belgisch publiek verwittigen : We zijn niet in Zweden om te vechten voor de overwinning".
Geef de jongen een kans eh!

er zijn hiere 2 mensen die Duval in hunne top 6 hebben staan, beide op de 6e plaats (onder wie de echte rally-kenner oneliner).
Een beetje goede hoop hé, licht optimisme (maybe zwaar) kan nooit kwaad.
Of heb ik vorige post verkeerd geinterpreteerd en was da laatste regeltje ook gequoted?
Te hoge verwachtingen kunnen wél kwaad. Gun de jongen toch wat aanpassingstijd. Top 6 is niet realistisch. Almaar goed dat jullie niet de managers van Ford zijn. Die jongen zou zichzelf de dood inrijden...

Die draait dan ook al een paar koerskes mee eh (in een WRC bedoel ik)...
Van mij mag hij geweldig hard gaan en enorm goed scoren maar dat is niet de opdracht die hij meekrijgt van FORD.
Niet vergeten dat hij een ZEER goed contract heeft en door hard te gaan (lees risico's te nemen) en eventueel een sortie te doen zou hij in zijn eerste rally zijn toekomst (bij FORD) mogelijk al hypothiceren.
Als (fabrieks)piloot heeft hij een OPDRACHT, namelijk ervaring opdoen, en kan hij die beter zo goed mogelijk vervullen.
Als beiden samen kunnen, ervaring opdoen EN goed finishen, is dat natuurlijk meegenomen.

I agree.
Hij is daar om ervaring op te doen. Niet om te scoren.
Dat hij maar rustig leert en dan binnen een jaar of 3 kan hij er echt invliegen.
zeker niet teveel verwachtennvan Duval . Het is op sneeuw en dat is nog altijd iets voor mensen met ervaring.
Carlos Sainz heeft afgelopen weekend bij een test voor de rally van Zweden een eland aangereden. De Spanjaard en zijn landgenoot-copiloot Luis Moya bleven ongedeerd. De Ford Focus van Sainz liep wel averij op ... net als de eland.
Het ongeval gebeurde afgelopen zondag. Een eland van naar schatting 200 kg sprong plotseling op de weg, net op het ogenblik dat Sainz kwam aangereden. De impact was zo hevig, dat de rolkooi van de Focus geplooid werd. Sainz en Moya kwamen er met de schrik vanaf.

Duval faces baptism of ice

Ford team director Malcolm Wilson says that he expects no heroics from his newest driver Francois Duval on the Swedish Rally, the 21-year-old Belgian’s first outing in a World Rally Car.
Duval, the youngest ever works rally driver, is also driving a Puma this year and has rallied a Group N Lancer in the past, but this will be his first major event in a car as potent as a works Focus. Wilson is in no doubt that he is ready for it after an encouraging performance during a test in Cumbria and a couple of days in Sweden just before the recce.
“I just want him to get to the end of the rally, get the experience, do a similar job to what Markko Martin did in Monte Carlo. He has driven a Group A-type car before,” Wilson said.
Martin finished 12th on the Monte, but if anything, the opposition Duval will face in Sweden is even more formidable.

Idd dien had zennen auto in de prak gereden voor de voorstelling deze avond en bij ford kregen ze de auto niet op tijd in elkaar.
das weer een plaatsje dichter bij de top 6 hé (dit was dus een grapje)
Echt traag lijkt hij op die "jump" foto ook niet te gaan eh :-)
Laat ons afwachten eh jongens, als Ford zelf zegt dat hij niet te zot moet doen, gaan wij hen niet tegenspreken eh...
Dat hij maar zot doet in de Deutschland rally :D :D :D

Misschien is een top 6 plaats voorspellen inderdaad een beetje te optimistisch van mezelf... zéker in Zweden. Misschien is het beste resultaat dat we hem kunnen wensen een finish!
Omdat hij in het verleden al bewezen heeft dat telkens hij met een nieuwe wagen aan de start komt (Saxo,lancer,celica,puma) hij al meteen snel is (kijk ook naar race of champions) ben ik toch benieuw hoe hij gaat presteren t.o.v.
Loeb => rivaal van vorig jaar uit super 1600 én ook eerste rally van Zweden ? (of vergis ik mij)
Panizzi => al heel wat meer ervaring, maar niet echt op dit terrein
Freddy Loix => belgisch onderonsje
De tijden van kp1 ga ik toch met argusogen bekijken. (handig dat de rally begint om 8.15u => perfecte timing voor als ik begin te werken :p )

Freddy Loix made a spectacular return to the Castrol Hyundai squad on Thursday, setting second quickest time at the shakedown less than a fortnight after breaking a bone in his ankle on the Monte Carlo Rally. But team boss David Whitehead warned that his Belgian driver hadn't done anywhere near enough testing and that he was consequently under no pressure to get a result.
"To be honest, there is nearly no pain," Loix disclosed. "They put a special protection round my ankle and I cannot do any damage, even if I am pushing very hard with the left foot, because I brake all the time with my left foot. I feel very safe with it. Inside the car, it's looking a bit like an automatic! It's got a very big brake pedal and a very small clutch, but we only use the clutch at the start and the finish of the stage."

Hij laat daar toch al goeie dingen zien in Zweden, spijtig van zijn voet, anders reed hij ZEKER binnen de eerste 3! :D :D

Update after day 1 :
Rovanpera is less than a second adrift of the rally lead
Peugeot stars Marcus Gronholm and Harri Rovanpera have taken a solid grip on the Swedish Rally after Friday's opening leg, the Finnish duo swapping the lead throughout the day and ending the day just 0.9 seconds apart at the head of the field.
The Peugeots have performed faultlessly throughout the day and are seemingly unchallenged. "There's nothing I can do about them," admitted Ford's Colin McRae, who is best of the rest.
McRae set fastest time on the final stage of the day's five tests. He is, however, 40.6 seconds adrift of the leaders and will need to produce a stunning drive over the next two days if he's to end Peugeot's recent domination of this rally, and the Scandinavians' lifelong stranglehold on a rally that they simply refuse to let outsiders win.
Conditions were expected to be near perfect, with a fresh layer of snow on top of hard packed ice. However, a surprise snowfall before the first stage caught out several drivers who floundered on the wrong tyres and are now having to fight back from lowly places. Running first on the road was no advantage for series leader Tommi Makinen and it seemed he would have the same problem tomorrow when the running order is reversed.
But the Finn stuffed his Subaru into a snow bank, damaged the cooling system, and was forced to retire soon afterwards.
"We cut a corner a bit too much and hit one of the big fresh snow banks," said Makinen. "We didn't slow down at all and didn't think anything was wrong but snow must have got into the radiator and blocked the cooling system. The engine started to lose power so we stopped to look but there was nothing we could do about it. It was too late. We have been unlucky with our road position and the change of weather at the start, the snow was just so deep and we lost a lot of time."
The mid-afternoon action saw several drivers trying hard to throw away their chances. Thomas Radstrom and Sebastien Loeb both hurled their Citroens off the road, and it must have been especially galling for Radstrom who then set fastest time on the next stage to show what he might have been capable of.
Mitsubishi's Francois Delecour has also spent 15 minutes in a ditch and World Champion Richard Burns saw a comfortable third place become a long shot for even a points finish when he too opted for the scenery rather than the road.
Tomorrow holds six stages on which to do battle, the first three having been used already today so road position might not be so crucial in the morning.

Freddy Loix was the team's surprise of the day who, despite braking with a foot undergoing rehabilitation, set an outstanding third fastest stage time on the longest and toughest stage of the event, the 40.51km Granberget 1. Freddy started the day very carefully in order to find the most comfortable and effective way of braking and clearly adapted very quickly, improving his stage times immediately.
"I am very happy with the car - it is so easy to drive, I have made no mistakes and I'm feeling very positive," commented the likeable Belgian. "I have had no pain in my foot but the protection I am wearing is obviously heavier than just a driving boot alone, and that has been giving me a bit of cramp in my leg which I really noticed on the long stage [SS3]. I am very happy with my times but I am honestly quite surprised. I think we have benefited by running further down the order as we have clearer roads but we were also hindered by having to run the last stage in the dark and the frontrunners could do it in the light, so I think it evens out in the end. Tomorrow my plan is just to keep driving the same as today - as fast as I can without taking any risks."

Loix heeft op dit moment 32 seconden voorsprong op teammaat en Zweden-specialist (en 4-voudig wereldkampioen) Kankkunen. Toch wel een puike prestatie voor iemand met een gebroken enkel!

Leg two of the Swedish Rally saw Hyundai crew Freddy Loix/Sven Smeets end the day in an outstanding fourth positon overall, closely followed by Juha Kankkunen/Juha Repo in ninth, and Armin Schwarz/Manfred Hiemer in 22nd.
The day's stages saw no overnight snow as temperatures warmed hovering around 4ºC, and while there was a steady drizzle of precipitation, the thawing process had obviously begun resulting in even more ice and surface water – a contrast to yesterday's conditions. The first three stages were also repeats of yesterday's stages with very rutted surfaces and a quantity of gravel to contend with.
Continuing their style from the opening leg, Hyundai duo Freddy Loix and Sven Smeets exceeded their expectations and drove solidly and consistently enough to hold position on the leaderboard after augmenting it to fourth on the opening 40.51km Granberget stage of the day.
“I am honestly exhausted, but my ankle is good and I have no pain,” said a tired but pleased Loix. “It is my thigh which is feeling very heavy and because of that it's difficult to brake smoothly. I am braking much too heavily as I am losing a bit of feeling in my leg and I have to keep telling myself to brake more softly. The stages that we ran for a second time were very difficult for me and for the repeated stages tomorrow the suspension will need to be a bit stiffer. I am looking forward to the two fresh stages though – they are easier for me. Now I just need a good night sleep and I'm ready to go again!”
Commenting on Freddy's progress, Team Doctor Paul Trafford said, “I think we can say that Freddy's performance is a testament to both his physical fitness and mental strength. To be able to overcome an injury that would usually require a number of weeks out of action is quite extraordinary and to be able to perform at such a high level even with a splint on his ankle is outstanding.”
The Finnish pair Juha Kankkunen and Juha Repo had a few problems early in the day but still dropped only two places and managed to hold onto that position for the duration of the day. “We lost diff pressure on the first stage and we still had a few concerns during stages seven and eight,” said co-driver Repo. “The last set of stages were slightly better but the main concern was that Juha [Kankkunen] lost the rhythm he had yesterday. Considering the problems we had we are quite pleased to be in ninth. A lot of people are pushing really hard now so we will try and get our rhythm back tomorrow and see what we can do.”
Teammates Armin Schwarz and Manfred Hiemer found it difficult to set competitive times owing to the car feeling uneasy. “I lost my confidence as the car was feeling very nervous and as a result quite difficult to drive. We have changed the front differential as well as the shocks now – we'll see for tomorrow but it really depends on whether I can get some confidence back.”

Loix slechts 14de en laat Burns zo voorbijgaan in het algemeen klassement. Hij is nu 5de.
SS13 is gecancelled wegens de modder en de teams zijn er blij om want er was een probleem met de hoeveelheid beschikbare benzine.

Volgende manche van dit kampioenschap is tijdens de Rally van Catalonie.
Hij mag wel nog eens met de WRC rijden maar waar weet ik niet meer.

Ik wil hierbij na een paar dagen ziekteverlof BEIDE belgische piloten feliciteren met hun prestatie's ! Vooral het relaxte rijden van Freddy viel mij op en de de jump van François was ook niet te versmaden !!! Dat belooft voor de toekomst.
