View Full Version : FIA F2 in 2009? Max pest Bernie ;)
The FIA has announced a shock decision to resurrect the Formula Two name from 2009 as an 'inexpensive' platform for aspiring driver talent as a stepping stone for Formula One.
How the FIA hopes to achieve running costs of around 200,000 per car per season remains to be seen. The target figure is significantly lower than it costs to compete in the current traditional ladder series - GP2 Series and F3.

"If it's a way in to Formula One then of course we will look at it," Carlin told autosport.com. "We can't get into GP2 and it will be good to have a more natural way up, so that you can do F3, F2 and eventually F1.

Reden lijkt me duidelijk waarom Carlin voor is ;)
The FIA is close to reach an agreement with Mygale to develop the new Formula 2 cars, Italiaracing.net apprended. Mygale has its mase in the neighbourhood of Magny-Cours. Owned by Bertrand Decoster, the French constructor is developing a Formula 3 car in opposition to Dallara, with good results in the British Series, and builds all the F.BMW chassis. Plus, the 207 Spiders, F.Ford, F.Campus, F.2000 USA and F.Novis. The F.2 Project will be the first high-potential car project for Mygale.

The FIA's proposed Formula 2 Championship is to take the form of a one-make arrive-and-drive category, the sport's governing body has indicated after announcing on Saturday that it has launched the tender process for the series.
In a statement on the FIA's website, the governing body invited manufacturers to pitch for an exclusive three-year deal to supply the cars from 2009 onwards.
Doubts had been raised by several team principals from current feeder formulas about containing costs to the specified target figure of 200,000, but the FIA appears to have got around this by transferring the cost to the manufacturer, which would receive 20% of each car's bodywork space to advertise its brand.
"The selected tenderer will be responsible not only for the design, production and transportation of a sufficient number of race-ready and technically identical cars to each event and official testing but also for all maintenance and repair work on those cars throughout the season," the FIA said in a separate 74-page tender document.
"It will also be responsible for supplying all fuel, tyres and other consumables, all spare parts and for providing a number of technical personnel to support the competitors at events and official testing.
"It is envisaged that competitors would be responsible for the cost of replacing parts damaged as a result of racing accidents."
The successful constructor would also be responsible for producing the identical 400bhp machines, which would be supplied to teams for six tests and 10 two-day weekend events during a European-based season.
After each event the cars would be returned to the constructor and teams then draw lots to find out which chassis they receive at the next event.
Each event would include one hour of free practice, one hour of qualifying and one race of approximately 175km, although this format could change into a heats/final system if more than 26 entries are received for the series.
...
"It is hoped that the cost to a competitor of competing in the championship for a calendar year - to include full participation in all official testing and events - could be in the region of 200,000 per car, though no minimum or maximum price is indicated in this tender," read the statement.

Zou Trevor Carlin nog zo enthousiast zijn? ;)
Niet echt:
...
Trevor Carlin, whose team compete in Formula BMW, Formula Three and World Series by Renault, felt that the category may have to be run centrally.
"The arrive-and-drive style seems like a good idea for the drivers, but why would they need teams?" he explained.
"You'd lose any changes you make to your cars when you get a different one for the next race, and you don't know who has been maintaining the car you get. That's not an attractive thought. I think it would make more sense to run the cars centrally."

Ik kan er niet enthousiast van worden.
Press Release
FIA Formula Two Championship
15/09/2008
MotorSport Vision (MSV) has won the tender to supply chassis and engines for the new FIA Formula Two Championship, following a fax vote of the FIA World Motor Sport Council. As part of the winning tender it has been agreed that MSV will be the promoter of the Championship as well as the operating entity for all of the cars.
MSV has commissioned WilliamsF1 to design the car, which will incorporate a turbocharged 1.8 litre Audi engine and be built to Formula One-level safety standards. The first prototype car is on schedule for its testing debut in November 2008, with the Championship due to start in May 2009 and comprising 16 races over eight events. Performance levels will be between Formula Three and Formula One and the cost per competing driver will be less than 250,000.
Max Mosley, FIA President said,
The objective is to make top-level international single-seater racing available to drivers who at present have difficulty in raising enough money to demonstrate their talent. Formula One and other major championships will benefit by being able to draw on a far larger pool of drivers, while competitors from countries which do not yet have an established motor racing structure will find it easier to make progress.
We hope to reveal talent that might otherwise never have emerged and we look forward to seeing drivers coming into Formula One with Super Licences gained in Formula Two.
MSV, which is run by Jonathan Palmer, who won the penultimate FIA Formula Two Championship in 1983, has extensive experience in supplying race cars and promoting motor racing events. MSV owns and operates five circuits in the UK and has run the Formula Palmer Audi racing championship for the last 11 years. MSV is also the commercial and organisational rights holder for the British Superbike Championship.

The champion in the revived Formula Two series will receive a Formula One test with Williams as part of their prize.
The test was announced during the official F2 launch event at the Williams Conference Centre.

Bestaat Williams tegen die tijd nog? ;)

MotorSport Vision boss Jonathan Palmer says the relaunched Formula Two field will expand from 20 cars to 24 due to a huge level of interest in the category.
Palmer revealed that 16 drivers had now signed up for the series, and believes its low-cost philosophy has been key to its success.
