BMW became the first European carmaker publicly to consider tapping Germany’s government- backed banking rescue scheme on Tuesday and said it might also seek US assistance.

GMAC, General Motors’ financing arm, on Wednesday said there was “substantial doubt” as to whether Residential Capital, its mortgage finance unit, would survive without support.
The company reported a wider third-quarter loss, signalling further trouble for America’s biggest carmaker, which is talking to Chrysler about a merger aimed at saving costs and staving off a cash crisis.
GMAC’s net loss widened to $2.5bn from $1.6bn a year ago, which it attributed to a $1.9bn loss at ResCap, lower used-vehicle prices and deteriorating creditworthiness among carbuyers and dealers.
