McRae considers drastic finger chop
Injured Ford star is willing to lose a troublesome digit
McRae broke his finger when he hit a tree in Corsica
Colin McRae is prepared to sacrifice a finger for the sake of his World Rally Championship hopes this year.
The Ford star broke a little finger on his left hand in a huge crash on the Tour de Corse last week. Despite the injury, McRae will compete on this weekend's Rally Catalunya. But if he finds his driving is impeded by finger trouble, he has told his team that he is willing to have it amputated.
Ford's European director of motorsport, Martin Whittaker, told Radio 5 Live: Colin said to me a couple of days ago that if [the finger] does get in the way in Catalunya - and we've got four or five rallies coming up that we know we can win - 'I'll just have it taken off'.
"It's not a decision he's going to take lightly, but I think it shows the commitment and level of effort these guys are willing to put into careers."
