Lowes and behold. It's Berk again! - May 22, 2002

<http://escors.racesimcentral.com/series/ecs/2002/news/02_may/lowes_and_behold_its_berk_again.jpg> Charlotte, NC - Lowe's MotorSpeedway, the name itself doesn't have as much of a ring to it as it's former name, Charlotte MotorSpeedway. Well known among racing enthousiasts from across the world for the fast racing, hard fighting, and tough crashes. It became the setting of a remarkable race in the ECS, ESCORS' step-up class. The new rules, which were in effect as of this race, made it tough for everyone to be really fast. Juhani Oksanen took the pole, coupled to Breznik and Berk, who made another guest appearance. You could see who was working on the race setup and not minding about the qualifying positions, because the gap for the top 7 was only 0.8 mph, however the gap between 7th and 8th placed drivers was no less than 1.3 miles.

The start of the race had the spectators think of another "wreckfest", but after the initial problems in the opening laps of the race, a clean, fast, race enfolded. Oksanen led the first part of the race followed by Berk, Breznik, Walden, Champer, and a few others who were destined to get to the front. Oksanen would be surely among the top ranks this race if he could keep his car in one piece. Unfortunately for him, Greg Gyarmati, who was spun around at the second restart of the race and was pretty banged up, misjudged his evasive manouvre when the leaders caught him in lap 24. Gyarmati got stuck on the wall all the way through turn 2, and was conciderably slower than the lead pack, who were fighting it out hard. Berk was beneath Oksanen in turn 2, heading towards the backstretch first. That may well have been his luck, since Oksanen tried to dodge the No. 95 car of Gyarmati, but slightly touched him, making him slow down and slide the rear a bit. Breznik, driving the No. 22 Pro-Eco car, couldn't check up in time and plunged head first into Oksanen. The two were spinning across the backstretch, and Stijn Claessens, who was involved in an early crash, got caught up in it. Bart van Nevel and Raymond Sagius, who were some 5 seconds behind the leaders, arrived at the backstretch to find it all smoked up. Unable to see where the cars were, Sagius slowed down to see how van Nevel was getting through. He wasn't. He plunged into Breznik who was stuck on the outside wall, clearing the way for Sagius, but damaging his car. Sagius got through by banging the wall trying to squeeze through the little opening. That was a horrible crash, several hard hits, but the safety of the cars under the new rules proved itself as none of the drivers were injured.

After a long clean-up period the drivers that remained in the race took it upon themselves to have another long green stint. And a long stint it became. Berk and Champer at the front of the pack, Sagius a long way behind in 3rd. Popovski was doing good at that point in 4th, and Breznik, ater the incident found that his car was handling a lot better, and the speed wasn't too bad either. A long game of catch-up brought Breznik 4th, and right at the moment the caution-flag flew in lap 52, he took over the 3rd spot.

On cold and worn tires it proved to be difficult to restart the race, and a few more incidents occured, all in the backfield. Breznik was on the move, and Sagius behind him was hoping to tag along at the next restart. Taking the green in lap 62, Breznik was close to Champer in the Team Freedom colors, and as they drove into turn 3 Champer must've felt the intense pressure Breznik was putting on him. Champer slid up high into the banking, slowed slightly to recover, and came back down. Breznik on the other hand thought this was his cue to take 2nd, and moved below Champer. They touched, and Champer had the car turn the wrong way around. Sagius saw it all happen and was able to go low, onto the grass, to keep his car going in the right direction. K. van Nevel, who had moved up to 4th steered clear too, as did Oksanen, who made a remarkable recovery from his earlier mishap.

4 laps to go as the caution waved. Berk in the lead, Breznik in 2nd, Sagius 3rd and van Nevel 4th. Was this the finish, or would there be a dash-for-the-cash? Lights went off on the pacecar with 2 to go. A dash it would be...

You could feel the excitement rise in the stands, you could hear the spotters and crewchiefs give last minute hints. As the cars rounded turn 4, the all familliar sounds from the headphones: "Pacecar is off.... Get ready... Get Ready... Get Reeeeaaaaadyyyyyyy..Green Green GREEN!"... About 1.5 miles of no holds barred racing. Fights all over the place, and a few blocks... Coming off of turn 4 it was Berk in 1st, with Breznik frantically trying to stick a nose in. Berk took the checkered, Breznik came in second 0.16 seconds behind, Sagius 3rd, Koen van Nevel 4th, Juhani Oksanen in 5th.

After the race, Champer and Breznik had a little talk about their incident, each saying they were not at fault. Berk couldn't care less, as he won his 3rd race in the ECS this season, making the Dupont Chevrolet the darling of winner's circle.

stevige rollkooi :) die #22 is zelfs nog als 2de geďndigt.
