Irvine linked to Jordan return

Sponsor wants Ulsterman back at Silverstone-based team

Jaguar star Eddie Irvine is being targeted for a return to Jordan next year by the team's sponsors, according to The Sun newspaper.

It has been claimed that cigarette brand Benson & Hedges is keen to have a British driver back at the team for the first time since Damon Hill quit Jordan and Formula 1 at the end of 1999.

Irvine is widely tipped to be replaced at Jaguar for next year. The 36-year-old's contract, worth in the region of £6 million a year, will run out at the end of this season.

A source close to Jordan told The Sun: "Eddie Jordan has the final say on drivers but, if B&H had their way, Irvine would be the perfect choice.

"He is high-profile and they would be delighted if he finished where he started - with Jordan. If they were to offer paying his wages, that could swing things."

Irvine began his F1 career at Jordan at the end of 1993. He stayed with the outfit until 1996 when he joined Ferrari
