Er zijn wat wijzigingen voor de WK rally's van volgend jaar:

The World Motor Sport Council decided today to limit the number of starters for each World Championship event to 90 cars from the beginning of the 2002 season.

In a further ruling the FIA appears to have attempted to limit the use by Manufacturers Teams of "specialist" tarmac or gravel drivers. It has ruled that "save in exceptional circumstances the two drivers initially nominated by a Manufacturer may not be changed," though "the driver of a third car may be changed for each rally."

The detail of the limitation on entrants to each rally includes a recommendation as to the cars / groups included. On rallies which are a round of the Super 1600 Championship a total of 30 World Rally Cars, 30 Super 1600 cars, and 30 other entries is recommended. For other WRC rounds 30 World Rally Cars, and 60 other entries are suggested.

Other detailed decisions -

Number of cars entered by a Manufacturer - Each Manufacturer must enter all events with at least two cars and a maximum of three cars.

Nomination and changing of drivers - Save in exceptional circumstances, the two drivers initially nominated by a manufacturer may not be changed.

The driver of a third car may be changed for each rally. The driver's name must be notified to the FIA at the time the car is entered.

Awarding of points - Of the three cars entered by a manufacturer, only the two best placed may score points. Thus a non-registered competitor may not take points from a competitor registered in the Championship.

New manufacturers - A manufacturer who has never previously been entered in the World Championship may take part with a World Rally Car after the start of the season, but may not score points in the Championship for either the Drivers' or the Manufacturers' title. The manufacturer must then take part with at least two World Rally Cars and a maximum of three cars in all the remaining rallies in the Championship.

Allocation of numbers - The World Champion driver of the previous season is allocated number 1. The second driver of his team is allocated number 2. Number 3 is reserved for the third driver of his team.

Subsequent numbers are allocated according to the classification of the previous year's Manufacturers Championship: the previous year's highest classified manufacturer (other than the one for which the Drivers' Champion drives) is allocated numbers 4, 5 and 6; the next manufacturer is allocated number 7, 8 and 9 and so on.
