Sainz considers Hyundai
October 8, 2002
Spain’s double World Rally Champion Carlos Sainz could drive for Hyundai next year if he fails to piece together a deal with Ford.
Sainz has repeatedly stated that he wishes to remain with Ford, but Malcolm Wilson’s team is facing a severe financial squeeze and it is far from certain that the money can be found either for Sainz or to run a third Focus. In contrast, while Hyundai’s budget is not yet fixed, team director David Whitehead is pressing hard to run three cars and has said that he likes the idea of recruiting Sainz.
“I am talking with them,” Sainz replied when asked if he could join Hyundai. “If Ford is not giving anything, I don’t have any option. You can say nothing till everything is done.”
If Sainz were to join Hyundai, Juha Kankkunen’s future with the team could be called into question. The Spaniard has also talked with Subaru, but team director David Lapworth emphasised that an extra driver would not be recruited if doing so compromised the development programme
