Dit weekend is het zover: de Bathurst 1000.
Wayne Gardner start niet na een crash.
Veteran John Bowe took two seconds of the V8 Supercar lap record at the Mount Panorama circuit in qualifying for Sunday's Bathurst race.

The double winner of the classic will now run 15th and last in Saturday's Shootout, which will decide the starting order for the 1,000km event.

"It's certainly a lap for the old guard, that's for sure," said Bowe. "The lap was a good, but nothing too special, if pressed I could have gone quicker again. My biggest concern is that it takes at least a couple of laps to get the tyres up to temperature, but I'll give it my best shot."

Mark Skaife was second fastest in his Holden, just two hundredths behind Bowe. Fellow Commodore driver Jason Bright was third quickest.

John Cleland was 17th fastest in his Ford Falcon, while the Yvan Muller/Andy Priaulx entry was 18th.

Former world 500cc motorcycle champion Wayne Gardner has been withdrawn from the event after crashing heavily at the first corner when his front brakes failed. He was knocked unconscious in the incident, and was subsequently diagnosed with mild concussion, forcing him to pull out.

Mark Skaife took his fourth Bathurst pole by winning the Top 15 Shootout from Ford driver John Bowe. Skaife took pole with a time of 2m08.8278s.

Running last start in the shootout, Bowe almost grabbed pole, beating Skaife's first sector mark but dropped time over the top of the Mountain.

"I was a bit wussy at Forrest Elbow, I thought it would be slippery but it wasn't," Bowe said. "The car was terrific."

The last car to win the V8 Supercar race at Bathurst from pole was Larry Perkins back in 1993 but it doesn't worry Skaife.

"It hasn't even entered my brain, I would have thought starting the race from pole position would be an advantage, if we haven't done it before it is for some other reason than that."

Jason Bright, the 1999 winner, and his co-driver from that year Steven Richards make up the second row, while Todd Kelly starts fifth despite almost hitting the wall after running wide on oil left by Glenn Seaton.

Skaife seals championship title

Mark Skaife and Jim Richards triumphed in the prestigious Bathurst 1000, leading home a Holden Racing Team one-two –three.

Steven Richards and Russell Ingall finished second after Skaife relieved Richards of the lead with 15 laps remaining. However, Skaife only just made the finish with serious overheating problems caused by the cooling ducts on his Holden Commodore becoming blocked by plastic bags.

Richards and Ingall struggled with pace throughout the race, but a storming drive in the middle stages by Ingall kept them in contention for victory.

Jason Bright and Tomas Mezera completed the podium, with six-times winer Larry Perkins and Konica V8 Series Champion Paul Dumbrell in fifth place.

Former BTCC champion John Cleland finished 19th in his Ford Falcon, with current BTCC racers Andy Priaulx and Yvan Muller retiring with 40 laps to go after a strong showing.

Nine-times winner Brock, making a farewell appearance in the race he made his own struggled home with mechanical problems.
