Whilst any plans for Ford to mount a racing programme for their 21st century version of the classic GT40 (now redubbed just plain old GT!) remain unknown, there are plans afoot to bring the classic shape back to the classic tracks of Europe in 2004.
Plans were unveiled at AUTOSPORT International for a one make series, the Roaring Forties, to visit eight top class European circuitsin 2003, including Brands Hatch, Le Mans, Spa, Monza and the Nurburgring.
A maximum of 24 cars will make up the grid and all will be recreations of the classic Mk 1 GT40 powered by identical 350 bhp 5 litre Ford V8 engines. All cars in the series will carry classic 1960s colour schemes.
The package for the season is clearly aimed at the gentleman driver, but if it does come to fruition the sight of 24 (albeit not quite real!) GT40s will surely make a magnificent sight.
Visitors to the show can see the series development car in the Constructors Pavilion in Hall 10 of the NEC.
