Saleens Given the FIA All Clear
“The Saleen S7-Rs have been positively inspected by the FIA, and therefore should be homologated in time for the 2003 season.”

Those are the official words, which effectively mean that Graham Nash can enter his GNM Saleens in the 2003 FIA GT Championship. Franz Konrad too?

“We’ve been sure that things would work themselves through for some time, but we couldn’t announce anything until we had the written approval of the FIA,” said Graham Nash this afternoon. “But our drivers and sponsors have stuck with us all along, and I can now confirm that Tommy Erdos and Mike Newton will share one car, with Pedro Chaves, Miguel Ramos and Ni Amorim in the other entry.”

Ni Amorim is an interesting character to slip into the Chaves / Ramos car, the regular pairing having been winners in the Spanish GT Championship last year, and raced at Le Mans in the RML / GNM Saleen. Amorim lost out at Freisinger early last year, but now has a chance to shine in a permanent drive for the season.

For Tommy Erdos and Mike Newton, this is an opportunity to race at the highest European level, and sees Erdos with a chance to show the form on the continent that was so impressive in the Cor Euser / Marcos days of 1996.

GNM are planning “a test programme at as many of the European circuits as we can get to.” A third chassis will fill the role of test car, and in Tommy Erdos, Mike Newton has an outstanding co-driver.

Saleens – just what the FIA Championship needed.
