Politicians in Switzerland are pushing for the country to lift its ban on motorsport to allow the possibility of a Swiss Grand Prix in the future.

Track racing has been banned, except for karting and motocross, in Switzerland since the Le Mans disaster in 1955, when 84 people were killed. But moves are afoot to push legislation through parliament to allow major motorsport events to be run within its borders.

The plan has been given extra credence as Switzerland could take advantage of its non-European Union status, which would allow tobacco advertising after the appointed EU cut-off date of July 2005. That would allow Formula 1 teams to run their cars with full tobacco livery, but would also require the construction of a brand new international standard circuit.

The last 'Swiss GP' was held in 1982, but that was run at Dijon in France
