NAKAJIMA 1-2 IN NIPPON CURTAIN RAISER

Ex Lotus Formula One driver Satoru Nakajima was celebrating last night after his Formula Nippon team took a formation 1-2 finish in the first round of the 2004 series at Suzuka on Sunday. 2002 Japanese F3 title winner Takashi Kogure led home his German team mate Andre Lotterer, who was arguably the star of the race after being forced to start from the pit lane in his Lola B3/51 when his engine refused to fire on the dummy grid.

Qualifying had been a totally different story with 2003 championship winning squad – Team Impul dominating proceedings. The teams new driver – Yuji Ide, wrapped up his first ever pole from French team mate Benoit Treluyer. Ide, who has replaced multiple champion Satoshi Motoyama at the Kazuyoshi Hoshino managed team, got a flying start and headed Team Le Mans driver Takeshi Tsuchiya, as Treluyer struggled with excessive wheel spin. Kogure at this stage was back in 5th place after making an equally poor getaway.

While Ide enjoyed a comfortable gap at the front, his team mate was struggling to get by and eventually spun, claiming that Tsuchiya was leaking oil from his catch tank. Treluyer recovered but retired soon afterwards with a throttle linkage problem.

By lap 8 the mandatory pit stops began in earnest with Lotterer being the first to take on fuel and front tyres. The leaders followed suit on lap 11 and when Kogure followed his team mates example by changing just his front tyres he was able to come out ahead of Ide who was delayed as he went for 4 new Bridgestones as opposed to 2.

All this early pit activity enabled Richard Lyons to lead the field in his Dandelion Lola B3/51. The Ulsterman was one of the last to stop after showing impressive pace, despite starting a lowly 9th on the starting grid. However his progress was halted when he pitted on lap 26 and the resulting slow stop dropped him back to 8th.

Lyons team mate Naoki Hattori now found himself in the lead by dint of not having stopped but the former Coloni F1 driver soon found Kogure and Ide baring down on him. Matters came to a head on lap 33 at the chicane as Kogure nudged the Dandelion machine in to a spin. Hattori headed for the pits with a left rear puncture and recovered to finish 7th just ahead of team mate Lyons.

There now began a furious race between Kogure and Ide, with the Impul Lola never more than a few tenths behind the Nakajima machine. Once again contact ensued when Ide made a rash overtaking attempt at the hairpin on lap 42, punting the back of Kogure who did well to control the resulting slide. Ide wasn’t so lucky and retired with accident damage.

This incident left Kogure leading from the charging Tsuchiya who was now making inroads and eating in to a 2 second lead. This was as close as he got however as he spun at the chicane and relegated him back to 11th position at the chequered flag.

Kogure was now alone at the front of the field with his team mate Lotterer some 4 seconds behind after an absorbing drive through the field. Taking the bottom step of the podium was Kondo’s Ryo Michigami who had a quiet and trouble free race to head home Tsugio Matsuda (Cerumo), and 5Zigen team mates Satoshi Motoyama and Toshihiro Kaneishi (Le Mans).

JAPANESE F3 – SUZUKA

Joao Paulo De Oliveira opened his Japanese F3 account with a 6th place in the first of the two races at Suzuka last weekend.

The Brazilian qualified for both races on the front row of the grid in his M-Tec Lola-Dome Mugen, signifying his intentions of challenging for the title this season. Race 2 saw De Oliveira retire although he did set the fastest lap of the race.

Now Motorsports pairing of Daisuke Ikeda and Wataru Kobayakawa came home 10th and 11th in race 1 and 11th and 12th in race 2.

Satoru Nakajima’s son – Kazuki took both wins in his category debut, racing for the Toms Toyota outfit.
