Battle for Burns resolved by settlement.

Richard Burns will be a Peugeot driver in 2002, after the French manufacturer reached an out-of-court deal with current employer Subaru.

According to Britain's Guardian newspaper, the new world champion will be allowed to join Peugeot - with whom he signed prior to the final two rallies of the 2001 season - after a well-guarded agreement was reached with Subaru team Prodrive. The Banbury-based team enforced an option it had in the Englishman's contract - which stated he would remain an Impreza driver should he win the world title - after Burns and co-driver Robert Reid triumphed on the Network Q Rally of Great Britain.

Earlier reports claimed that Burns would take a year's sabbatical should he not be able to join Peugeot, after Subaru insisted that it would take out an injunction to prevent him driving for any other team in 2002.

Peugeot is understood to have made an offer to buy the Briton out of his contract - said to be worth £7million - but neither team was available for comment.

zou, stom zijn een WK die zijn titel niet verdedigd.
