Red Bull: Gravel ace wanted

Red Bull Skoda team boss Armin Schwarz has admitted the Austrian outfit is still searching for a gravel driver to take the wheel of its second car. Rookie Andreas Aigner is in the lead car on 10 events this year, with Gilles Panizzi set to drive on the asphalt rallies in Spain, Corsica and Germany.

Swedish racing ace Mattias Ekstrom, who is backed by Red Bull, will drive the second car in Sweden, but will be unable to compete in any other rounds due to his commitments with Audi in the German DTM touring car series.

"We're open to proposals," Schwarz said in Autosport this week. "At the moment we don't have any one particular driver in mind."

One potential candidate for the seat is ousted Citroen driver Francois Duval, who drove an independent Skoda Fabia WRC in the Monte Carlo season-opener. Another possibility is former Peugeot and Mitsubishi gravel ace Harri Rovanpera, whose deal to run a privateer Mitsubishi Lancer WRC on February's Uddeholm Swedish Rally has fallen through.

Both would be able to join the Red Bull Skoda 'Manufacturer 2' team, as it is using a 2006-spec Fabia WRC with passive differentials for its second car to widen the scope for more experienced drivers, who would be ineligible to drive a 2005-spec car under the new regulations for this year.
