Head hints Montoya at fault in Brazil
Williams tech boss says clash could be costly
Montoya is swamped by the pack as he limps back to the pits
Williams technical director Patrick Head has cast doubt on Juan Pablo Montoya's assertion that Michael Schumacher was at fault for their clash on the opening lap of the Brazilian Grand Prix.
The Colombian was angered by the incident, which he felt was caused by Schumacher moving across his line under braking for Turn 4. But Head reckoned that his own driver might have to take the blame.
"I don't know, we'll have to look at the film and make a judgement," he said. "But [Montoya] was the car behind, and it was Juan that was moving across to the right, but I think he was just too close. We need to look and see if there's some film from the top [of the car] or something. But whatever it was, it destroyed his race for big points."
The incident cost Montoya the chance to race for the win. After pitting for a new nose and tyres, he charged back to fifth. With Schumacher winning the race, Montoya is now 10 points down on the reigning world champion. His team-mate Ralf Schumacher, who finished second in Brazil, is now second in the title race, two points ahead of Montoya.
Head added that Montoya's clash could prove costly in the long run. "Basically if you’re going to win a championship you don't bump into other cars, that's all there is to it," he said.
