Hoewel het officieel niet is toegestaan in de week voorafgaand aan een Grand Prix te testen, kwamen drie teams deze week in actie. Zij maakten gebruik van de mogelijkheid om een ‘shakedown’ uit te voeren ter voorbereiding op de Grote Prijs van San Marino, komend weekeinde. Voor een dergelijke test geldt dat niet meer dan vijftig kilometer wordt afgelegd. Ferrari-testcoureur Luca Badoer gaf de nieuwe F2002, bestemd voor Rubens Barrichello, de sporen op de Pista di Fiorano. Ook reed hij enkele ronden in Michael Schumachers auto en voerde hij enkele starts en pitstops uit
