Alesi: Hockenheim has changed

Jean Alesi, the occasional McLaren test driver and Mercedes-Benz DTM pilot, has said the Hockenheim circuit is a very different place with the major work being carried out there ahead of this year’s German Grand Prix.

The circuit was criticised by F1 chiefs for being too “mundane” with its super quick straights broken up by chicanes and the technical stadium section. The modifications, costing $45 million, will make the circuit more of technical layout, but it will still be challenging with high-speed sweepers and new chicanes to be included.

Alesi recently visited the circuit with Mercedes to test the CLK DTM contender and sampled the short circuit. He said the logging of much of the forest made the site barren, but he was in favour of the new surface.

‘It's like a desert without all the trees that used to be there,’ said the former Grand Prix winner.

‘The Hockenheim I have known for 15 years has changed so much! It is such a short track I could do it in 59 seconds, which was strange.

‘But the resurfacing is perfect; it is not only smooth, it is also very, very grippy.’

The German Grand Prix will be held on July 28.
