Competitive penalty for Aiello because of polluted fuel DTM-points leader and title favourite Laurent Aiello will not be allowed to start today in the qualification race at the Circuit Park Zandvoort in The Netherlands (start 15.20 h). The stewards decided to declare void the lap times of the fastest driver from yesterday’s qualifying and moreover decided to impose a ban from the qualification race, because it was discovered during a fuel check on Saturday evening, that the fuel in Aiello’s Abt-Audi TT-R was not identical with the officially admitted fuel.
Starts from last place on the grid: Laurent Aiello
This means that Aiello will be allowed to start into the main race from last place on the grid. Saturday’s qualifying is decisive for the grid line-up for the qualification race. And finally, only the result of the qualification race decides on the line-up for the main race. The reason for the pollution of the fuel, the Team Abt Sportsline communicated, is probably rest fuel from test sessions that the Abt-team held at the Lausitzring last week.
The press release by the scrutineers in Zandvoort (September 28, 2002), reads as follows: “The times from qualifying of the car with the starting number 3 of Laurent Aiello were declared void and a ban from the qualification race was imposed. In a fuel check after qualifying, the fuel used was found to be not identical to the reference fuel from the fuel station as designated by the organiser of the event. (Art. S22 sporting regulations 2002). The decision was announced at 23.58 h and is valid.”
