Deutschland rally to join world series

Well-informed sources believe that the Deutschland Rally will become part of the World Championship in 2002. It will be the first time that any German rally has qualified for the premier series in its 29-year history.

The German event, which is currently part of the European Championship, was observed for World Championship inclusion this year and met with a favourable response from works teams and top drivers.

It looks certain that the World Championship will continue to include 14 rallies and that a Mediterranean event may well be axed, but contrary to rumour, it seems that the Cyprus Rally will be reprieved. The betting is that one of a number of rallies with an indifferent safety record, thought to include both the Sanremo Rally and the Tour of Corsica, will be dropped instead, or perhaps the sole African event, the Safari.
