Abramovich eyes Minardi
Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, famous for his recent financing of Chelsea Football Club, has been linked to a significant investment in the Minardi team after he was seen in deep discussion with both Bernie Ecclestone and Minardi team boss Paul Stoddart at the European Grand Prix last month.
Abramovich, who has pumped £150 million into Chelsea over the past month, is thought to be targeting a Formula 1 team as his next investment - a theory that Paul Stoddart has welcomed.
"We need someone who can put proper funding into the team," Paul Stoddart told The Sun. "Minardi may be at the back of the grid at the moment but the only thing which has ever stopped us progressing is the lack of cash.
"I met Abramovich at the European Grand Prix and found him a charming person. He spent a lot of time in our garage and we arranged for his young son to sit in the cockpit of our car while mechanics did a practice pit-stop.
"We spoke about F1 and he appeared to have a real interest in the sport."
England football coach Sven Goran Eriksson confirmed that Abramovich was interested in Formula 1: "I knew was that he was going into football, and maybe formula one," he told a news conference this week.
Jim Wright, commercial director for the Williams team, also confirmed that Abramovich had met with Ecclestone. "I heard he had met Bernie," he said. "I think it would be really great if Abramovich became involved in formula one, particularly at a time when some teams are struggling."
