1998 IRL champion suffers multiple fractures in 200mph crash
Kenny Brack, the 1998 IRL champion and 1999 Indianapolis 500 winner is reported to have suffered multiple fractures in a violent accident on the 188th lap of the Chevy 500 at Texas Motor Speedway - the final round of this year's IRL IndyCar Series, according to the Reuters news agency.
The Swede, driving for Team Rahal, made contact with Tomas Scheckter's G-Force Toyota on the back straight at over 200mph as the pair fought over third place. The two cars locked wheels and Brack was launched into the air. His car flipped into the safety fencing and broke apart before rolling back down the track.
Scheckter was unharmed in the crash, but Brack had to be removed from his car and was taken to the circuit's medical centre where he was said to be awake and alert, before being airlifted to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. Brack's condition is considered serious but stable.
“Brack was cracking jokes with (wife) Anita while in the Texas Motor Speedway Infield care centre," said Brack's team manager Steve Dickson.
The race was stopped six laps early to muted celebrations. Gil de Ferran won the race, his last before heading into retirement, while Scott Dixon won the championship by finishing runner-up. Britain's Dan Wheldon finished third. AUTOSPORT.COM
