Will Taurus enter the `firstī diesel engine in Le Mans?

Wednesday, 24 March 2004

Autosport reports that Taurus will enter a LMP with a Caterpillar Diesel engine at Le Mans this year. The deal is a 2 year plan that will see the team in the bulk of the ALMS races and all of the European races. A press release is expected next week. Taurus and Caterpillar are not the first that will race with diesels at Le Mans, in 1950 Jean and Jacques Delettrez already entered with a six-cylinder 4.5 liter diesel engine (MAP). They entered a diesel for three consecutive years. Results were not good...

Ricardo Engineering also developed a Diesel based on the Judd GV5, delivering 600Bhp@6000 rev/min with a peak torque of 850Nm (see the picture above). Also rumors exists that Cosworth and Audi (2005?) but as well Peugeot are working on Diesel race engines.

A whole new strategy can be used with diesels as the economy benefit can be around 15 per cent. Also the huge torque would benefit the drivability out of corners.

More news as it comes...
