McNish, 31, has always been in the frame for the drive, but had to prove his pace compared to Salo in this year's testing programme. Toyota's team boss Ove Andersson stated at the launch of the car in March that McNish would get the drive if things went according to plan.

"Everything went well so there was no reason to change my mind," said Andersson.

McNish said: "My ability as an F1 driver was recognised [in the tests] and I am very happy to have been officially chosen as a driver for the coming season.
