International Formula 3000 and DTM ace David Saelens had a baptism of fire during his maiden Formula 1 outing with the Minardi team at Misano today (Wednesday) when his back wheel flew off pitching him into the grass.

Saelens, who drove for the European Minardi F3000 team this year, was given his first taste of Formula 1 machinery during the European Minardi day at the Italian circuit (click here for separate story) and was due to complete 12 laps.

However, on his 10th lap the right rear wheel of his PS01 comically overtook the car and bounced off the barrier high into the air, leaving the Belgian stranded at the side of the track with only three wheels on his wagon.

"I was just going along the back straight and suddenly the wheel overtook me," Saelens told Autosport.com. "I just spun off onto the grass at the chicane, but I was lucky not to hit anything."

Despite his bad luck, Saelens, who also drove a part season with Mercedes in the DTM this year, still managed to enjoy his debut F1 run and was convinced he could have gone faster on his remaining two laps.

"It was good. Really good," he enthused. "It was such a great feeling and much easier to drive than my F3000 car. I'm sure I would have been faster on the next lap. The power is OK and so is the steering, traction and downforce, but it is much harder to find the limit with the brakes. It reminds me of Formula 3, only faster. At least I can got to bed tonight knowing I have driven a Formula 1 car."

Saelens' short run did not contravene the current ban on Formula 1 testing as less than 50 km of running was completed and it comprised part of the Minardi celebration which included two-seater Formula 1 rides and a high-speed

You can go".

How rude..........

No decision yet on drivers, says Stoddart

Team boss warns against assumptions from pre-season testing

European Minardi boss Paul Stoddart has warned that nothing should be read into the variety of different drivers that will be used in forthcoming tests, despite the fact that a team mate for Alex Yoong has yet to be announced.
Minardi will begin testing at the Valencia circuit in Spain in two weeks' time and a number of different drivers are expected to be used in order to get through the Anglo-Italian team's pre-season work load.
The outfit's Formula 3000 International drivers from last year David Saelens and Christijan Albers are likely candidates to help out.
However, despite the fact that prospective takers for the second race seat, including Tomas Enge, Tarso Marques, Jos Verstappen and Heinz-Harald Frentzen, may not attend the test, it does not mean they are out of the frame, according to team boss Paul Stoddart.

Paul stoddard comments
"Nothing should be read into the presence of one driver or the lack of appearance of another," said Stoddart. "We're just doing what we've always done which is test responsibly a number of young drivers."

Minardi was due to begin testing at Barcelona next week, but factory-based reliability work with the team's new Asiatech engine means the team has decided to concentrate on getting next year's car completed; a novelty for the outfit which at the same time last year was on the verge of bankruptcy.
"We feel that we've done sufficient static rig work on reliability to do what we would have done in the first week of testing," added Stoddart. "So we're pressing ahead to get the PS02 out."
