Intro

Grand Prix 4 is based on Official FIA 2001 Formula One World Championship including all drivers in the final race of the season will be included in the game as well as is all teams: Ferrari, McLaren, Williams, Benetton, BAR, Jordan, Arrows, Sauber, Jaguar, Minardi and Prost.

Using a mixture of GPS data, video footage and thousands of specially commissioned photographs, the tracks have been accurately modelled to a high detail finish. All 17 tracks of the 2001 Season are represented: Australia, Malaysia, Brazil, San Marino, Spain, Austria, Monaco, Canada, Europe, France, Great Britain, Germany, Hungary, Belgium, Italy, USA and Japan.

Technical Details

Rendere is designed & developed specifically for GP4, the hardware only render engine brings realistic lighting and shadowing to the tracks and the cars. It includes (where appropriate to the hardware) -

- Hardware transform and lighting
- Full screen anti-aliasing
- Environment mapped cars
- Environment sourced reflections in wet surfaces
- Bump mapped perturbance (heat haze) from engine heat

Game Modes

Quick Race - Within two button presses the game player can be in the thick of the action of a F1 race. Totally customisable by the player, including driver, circuit, number of laps, and grid position. This is fast furious fun at its best.

Non-Championship - The game player can play a practice session, a qualifying session, a race or a whole race week-end at a circuit of their choice. The player can select driver, and number of laps, as well as the circuit. Great for practising ones skills before embarking on a full Championship Season.

Full Championship Season - Starting in Australia and finishing in Japan it is the players chance to drive a full championship season with the goal of becoming the Champion. The player can drive as whichever driver they choose, as well as varying the length of the race.

Quicklaps - Arcade mode. Up to 22 players compete to set the fastest lap on a chosen circuit.

Practise - This mode allows you to learn the track with no other cars present to get in your way.

Weather

The game has dynamic weather. This means that during a race, the weather can change dramatically from being sunny to being overcast to being extremely wet. The changing weather can make the game play a lot more strategic.

Audio

3D audio including improved use of EAX (where appropriate), reverb and full 3D spatial sound etc to give reverb in pitlanes, under bridges and in tunnels. Other cars - The player can now hear other cars in the world. Hear all 22 cars revving on the grid! This was not previously possible in GP3.
Engine sound - The engine sound has been upgraded using real F1 samples to make a totally authentic sounding car.
Pit to car radio - The pit-car radio is used to allow your pit crew to inform you of any potential problems such as debris on the track.
Crowd - The roar of the crowd adds to the atmosphere and can be heard from any car view. Garage audio - The sounds of the garage mechanics can be heard whilst waiting in the garage.

Pit Crew & Marshals

To bring more life into the game, using motion capture, the pitcrew and marshals have become fully animated 3D characters.
The Orange Arrows Formula One team assisted us with the motion capture by providing pit crew personnel, a Formula One car, and the tools such as jacks and spanners.

Car Models

The shape and decals of each of the 11 different cars is authentically represented.

Virtual Cockpit

The user may use this to look around in the cockpit whilst driving.

3D Pit Garages

In practice and qualifying sessions the player will start from inside the team garage. During qualifying the player will be able to watch his peers out on the track or study his position on the grid via an interactive TV monitor positioned just above the cockpit.

Difficulty settings

There are five difficulty settings - Rookie, Amateur, Semi Pro, Pro and Ace. As well as altering the opponent AI, they also dictate which of the driving aids the player can use. See below.

Driving Aids

The GPx brand of games have always had a pick up and play quality missing from many other racing games. This has been achieved with the use of eight optional forms of help:

Braking - Auto-braking helps the user to not overshoot the corners
Gears - Automatic gearbox
Auto right the car - After a crash, the car will repoint itself to face the correct way
Indestructible - No damage can be taken
Show best line - Best driving line displayed for the player to follow around the circuit
Suggested gear - Advises the user which gear he should take the next corner in
Throttle help - Helps the user to avoid wheelspin
Steering help - Assists the user in steering the correct way into the corners. Particularly useful when playing using a keyboard

TV Style Camera Views & Replay

When watching a race live or during a replay from a trackside camera position, the race will be displayed as it is on the TV. The overlays used will give the user the feeling that they are watching the Grand Prix on the television, rather than playing a game. Also T-Camera view is included.

MultiPlayer Gameplay

LAN - connection for up to 8 players (PC only).
Hotseat Mode - the users take turns to drive the same car around the track.
Split Screen - Up to 4 players can play in the brand new split screen mode. (Xbox only). Up to 2 players can play split screen PC or Xbox.
Modem-to-Modem - Allows to players to connect via a direct modem connection (PC only)
Serial Link - Allows 2 players to connect via a serial link connection (PC only)

Physics and AI

Unparalleled physics - Geoff Crammond's unparalleled physics have now been updated with the 2001 data to give the player the feeling of how it actually is to drive an F1 car. The physics feature full tumble and roll, virtual head movement etc. Each team has its own physics, for example with Ferrari winning the races is much easier than with Minardi.

Unbelievably realistic AI - The AI in the game has been upgraded from the already extremely high standard set by GP3.

Car set-up options - GP4 comes wih the ability to completely change the cars set-ups - everything from front wing angle to active differential. However, there is also a default set up for each track should he/she just wish to dive straight in to the 3D.

Extras

Gpaedia - Accessible from the menu, this area provides information about Formula 1 in general and the 2001 season. It also provides helpful information regarding car set-up, pit stops, how best to use them, and who does what during a pit-stop. This section features video footage of Mark Hemsworth, the Arrows Test Team Manager.
