Maleisië: Pole voor Schumacher

The warm conditions continued here in Malaysia for this afternoon's qualifying hour. Rain was predicted for this afternoon, however as the session got underway, track temperature was sitting at a very warm 37 degrees and rising. Pit lane is open and home driver Alex Yoong is the first to appear, the Minardi driver receiving the support of the crowd here this afternoon and posts the first official time of the session, his first qualifying time at home, a 1:40.617.

Mark Webber quickly appears just before his teammate pits, the Australian driver taking top spot with a best time of 1:39.950, slightly quicker than his earlier practice time. The Jordan of Takuma Sato takes to the track, the Japanese rookie getting in early here today after failing to qualify in Australia due to various problems, including the weather. P1 with a time of 1:38.179 as Michael Schumacher looks on from the Ferrari garage.

Next up, Jarno Trulli followed by the Toyota of Allan McNish and the Arrows of Enrique Bernoldi. Pedro de la Rosa is also on track as Trulli crosses the line to take P1 from Sato. Allan McNish returns to the Toyota garage without setting a time, the Scot touring the Sepang circuit on his way back to pitlane. Bernoldi takes third as several other drivers stream onto the track including the McLarens of David Coulthard and Kimi Raikkonen and the Williams of Juan Pablo Montoya.

Raikkonen instantly goes to the top of the leaderboard, claiming provisional pole with a 1:37.175 with ex-teammate Nick Heidfeld slotting into second, the Sauber driver seven tenths of a second slower. Juan Pablo Montoya crosses the line with a 1:36.599 and Coulthard is also quick but the Scot is unable to topple the Colombian, settling for second with a 1:36.711. Felipe Massa has a right rear puncture and fights to keep his Sauber under control. He does so and works his way back to pitlane for repairs.

Ralf Schumacher is on a flyer, the BMW Williams driver recording the best time of the weekend so far with a 1:36.086! Brother Michael decides the time is right and takes to the track for his first attempt to secure pole here in Malaysia. The Ferrari driver is fast and crosses the line to break the 1:36 barrier with a 1:35.969, .117 quicker than his younger brother.

Jenson Button puts his Renault into sixth while teammate Jarno Trulli sits in eighth. Felipe Massa rejoins the action, the young Brazilian now in the T car. With half the session gone, Rubens Barrichello is on his first run and slots into third between the two Williams drivers after running a little wide as he gets past one of the Jaguars who are in 13th and 19th.

Juan Pablo Montoya is out again and snatches pole from Schumacher by .277! The Michelin tyres seem to be working very well here this weekend. Nick Heidfeld moves into seventh place with Heinz-Harald Frentzen improving to 15th. David Coulthard is back on track, but cant improve on his fifth place. However, teammate Kimi Raikkonen improves and takes the place away from the Scot, relegating him back to sixth.

Giancarlo Fisichella puts the Jordan into ninth, the Italian hoping to secure eighth place on the grid here this afternoon. Michael Schumacher re-emerges, the Ferrari ace responding to Montoya's pole setting lap. All drivers have set a qualifying time apart from BAR driver Olivier Panis, who is currently suited up and waiting to go out. Schumacher starts a flying lap and sets the fastest first sector time of the weekend. He is giving it everything he has and crosses the start/finish line with a 1:35.266, smashing his own record pole time!!!

Juan Pablo Montoya looks at the monitor as his pole position gets snatched away, looks to his mechanics and prepares to return to the track. Rubens Barrichello fails to improve and stays fourth. Both McLaren drivers are back on track with changes to the front wings on their respective MP4-17's, but Raikkonen makes a slight error and tours back to the garage. Montoya improves to a 1:35.497, but it's not enough to reclaim provisional pole.

BAR mechanics work feverishly to set the T car up for Olivier with only fifteen minutes left on the clock. Mika Salo moves up into tenth place with Heinz-Harald Frentzen slotting the Arrows into eleventh. Improvement for Coulthard and Ralf Schumacher, but they stay in sixth and third places respectively. Panis finally appears and starts his first timed lap of the session.

Up into nineteenth goes Eddie Irvine, however Panis' time puts the BAR in 18th and pushes Irvine back to 20th while Jaguar teammate Pedro de la Rosa is currently in 15th place. Rubens Barrichello is currently lapping the track, however there is no improvement for the Brazilian driver and teammate Michael Schumacher returns to the track with only five minutes remaining.

Felipe Massa improves to 13th but is knocked back to 14th by the BAR of Jacques Villeneuve. The last minute dash is on as both Williams drivers take to the track for one last flying run followed by both McLaren drivers. Michael Schumacher is on another fast lap but he fails to improve on his earlier best. No further improvements and the session comes to a close. Michael Schumacher and Juan Montoya will start the Malaysian Grand Prix side by side!

The top six grid positions for tomorrows race are: Michael Schumacher, Juan Pablo Montoya, Rubens Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher, Kimi Raikkonen and David Coulthard.

Geen verassing lijkt me.
Het gaat hier om een circuit dat op aangeven van Schumi ontworpen is, waar hij de voorbije drie jaar steeds magistraal heeft gereden, in een wagen die ook nu nog de referentie is.
De enige verassing is voor mij de tweede plaats van Montoya, al vraag ik me af hoe lang het zal duren voor zijn BMW-motor het zal begeven?! Om en bij de 900 PK op 19.000 RPM en dat in Maleisië in handen van Monty ..... 'an accident waiting to happen'

Toch een veelbelovende startgrid, aangezien het verschil tussen Ferrari en Williams aanzienlijk kleiner is. Dat belooft voor morgen.

Ik vind het alweer spijtig dat Jaguar zo slecht aan het presteren is. Voor de rest denk ik dat de rijders deze keer volgens hun waarde (lees kunnen) gerandschikt zijn voor het vertrek van morgen. En inderdaad ook ik ben bang voor de BMW motor. Volgens mij gaat JPM hem niet sparen ( lees rijden lijk ne gek) om MS achter zich te houden ( ja MS laat hem bij de start voorbij en laat JPM zelf zijn doodvonnis tekenen ). We zullen zien morgen maar dit is nu eens mijn gedacht van de race van morgen.

Juan Pablo Montoya Yeah, I know, it's a bit frustrating. The car was really good, I was especially losing time in the last sector. In the first two sectors, I thought it was good and really put the third sector together, and it was a matter of putting it all together. The first sector wasn't very quick, just over a tenth off. I tried a bit harder in the second sector, but I made a little mistake, but that was it. I aborted the lap.

Dat verheugt mij niet enkel voor Montoya, maar voor het feit dat heel de boel weer mooi tesamen zit vanvoor, en Ferrari zeker niet meer dominant kan genoemd worden. Ze hebben nog altijd de beste kaarten, maar ze ziten toch in een minder makkelijke 'zetel'.

Die tijden zijn maar een kwart secondeke verbeterd tov vorig jaar. Khad wel meer verwacht. Kheb der natuurlijk wel weer niets van gezien van de qualifs (thx to you know who), dus kweet niets van de omstandigheden

Zoals reeds voorspeld is het verschil tussen de teams een stuk kleiner geworden. De 2002 wagens staan nu ongeveer op punt en de F2001 is aan het einde van z'n latijn.

We zien in Brazilië de F2002!

dan vergeet je ff een stuk. De set-up die wijzigt tussen verschillende qualify'ing runs. Ik kan een wonder-tijd rijden in sector 1, maar met die set-up niet vooruit raken in de 2 anderen. Je verandert set-up, en dan geraak je bochtige sector 1 niet vooruit, maar in de 2 andere vlieg je. Vooral sector 3 is met de lange rechte lijnen een plaats om je vleugel bijna te kunnen platleggen.

Voor de rest is en blijft McLaren toch wel bedroevend. 1,2 seconden trager weeral. Opent niet echt perspectieven op titelambities. Williams kan in het spoor van Ferrari blijven, alhoewel ik wel denk dat ze veel aan de BMW-motor te danken hebben. Plaats waar we dat vooral zullen opmerken (Monaco).

Het zal voor Coulthard toch wel weer "zeer" doen dat z'n teammaat Raikkonen netjes voor hem staat.Voor de rest is alles zo'n beetje dat ik had verwacht,behalve de nieuwe prachtprestatie van Salo met de Toyota!

Montoya zegt het eigenlijk al zelf. In bochten (downforce belangrijk) is Ferrari supersterk. Op de rechte lijnen moet BMW dat maar rechtzetten. Al vraag ik mij samen met de meeste hier af hoe je 19000 revs en 900 Pk aan de finish gaat brengen.

mja ok, maar dat is ook de plaats waar ze moeten zijn willen ze ooit top-ambities hebben he. Bovendien is de weg naar de top nog 2,5 seconden lang zene. Bovendien zit in dat middenpak alles zo dicht bijeen, dat ze misschien wel eens als 10e kunnen qualify'en, maar volgende race staan ze voor hetzelfde geld terug op plaats 18.

Bovendien iets wat me net opvalt. Was Schumi weeral zeker dat hij de pole zou hebben ?!? Slechts 9 laps gereden, dus nog 1 stint over om zijn tijd te verbeteren indien nodig. Iemand die de quali's gezien heeft die hier meer uitsluitsel over kan brengen??

We gaan een zéér intressante GP zien volgens mij ; als de logica wordt gerespecteerd en alles goed gaat zou JPM toch de leiding moeten nemen aan de 1e bocht . Maar wat vooral zo leuk is dat het gat met Ferrari zeer intressant is . We zijn nog maar aan de 2de gp van het seizoen en het wordt al duidelijk wie er voor de titel zal gaan vechten !!!

En Ja , als men verliest morge bij ferrari dan zal men niet aarzelen om de F2002 in te zetten in Brazilie .
