Troubled team in doubt for French GP

The Arrows Formula 1 team's participation in this weekend's French Grand Prix is in serious doubt after it emerged that the outfit's transporters have yet to leave for Magny-Cours.

Team boss Tom Walkinshaw is working hard to resolve the issues that almost forced the team out of the British Grand Prix a week and a half ago. He was forced to cover the costs of Arrows' supply of Cosworth engines himself, while fighting a dispute with shareholder Morgan Grenfell in London's High Court. Neither issue has been resolved.

A team spokeswoman at Arrows' Leafield base in Oxfordshire said: "Discussions are still going on and there are no conclusions as yet."

Usually, the team leaves for Magny-Cours on the Sunday before the race, although the cars are not transported until Monday or even Tuesday. The spokeswoman said: "It doesn't actually take that long to get there so I think we could be safe if they don't leave today."

At Silverstone the cars did not arrive until Thursday evening, after scrutineering took place. But the team won an extension, allowing them to be scrutineered on Friday morning before free practice begun. Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Enrique Bernoldi finally took to the track for Saturday morning's practice, once Walkinshaw had sorted a deal with Cosworth.

If Arrows is forced to miss this weekend, it could incur a fine of around £500,000 from motorsport's governing body, the FIA, which will only add to the doubts of the team's future in F1.

Minardi heeft wel het geld van Prost reeds gekregen, dus die zingen het dit jaar waarschijnlijk wel uit.

Als Frentzen zonder zitje komt, dan zie ik ze bij Toyota McNish nog wel eens vervroegd aan de deur zetten. Met Frentzen in het team komt Salo onder druk, wat Toyota ten goede komt.

Bernoldi en McNish gaan we niet echt missen, toch?

(16 juli 2002) Het financieel geplaagde Arrows team is vanavond met raceauto’s en materieel richting Magny Cours vertrokken en volgens een bericht van Tom Walkinshaw is men klaar voor de race op zondag. Verder erkende de teamprincipaal dat de toekomst van het team aan een zijden draad hangt.

“Dit soort onderhandelingen met investeerders zijn per definitie een complexe aangelegenheid maar er is geen andere optie dan de de onderhandelingen te continueren. Wij hebben echter wel meer tijd nodig om tot zaken te komen maar alle betrokkenen hebben de wil om tot een deal te komen die voor iedereen bevredigend zal zijn”.

“De investeerders eisen een grondig boekenonderzoek en dat is heel normaal maar tegelijkertijd neemt dit veel tijd in beslag. Ik heb vanavond de vrachtwagens met de raceauto’s en materieel richting Magny Cours gestuurd en zal al het mogelijke doen om zondag met twee auto’s aan de start te komen”.

Arrows heeft van de FIA toestemming gekregen om op uiterlijk vrijdagochtend de auto’s voor de gebruikelijke technische keuring (die normaal gesproken op donderdagmiddag plaats vindt) te presenteren.
