Ecclestone to axe digital F1 coverage

Lack of viewers cited as reason for pay-per-view failure

Bernie Ecclestone is ditching digital television coverage of Formula 1, according to a story in the Daily Mail.

The newspaper reports that Ecclestone's decision to stop the pay-per-view coverage, which has been available on Sky digital in the UK this year, has been made because the service has not attracted enough viewers.

The state-of-the-art digital service has been available in Germany, Italy and France, as well as in the UK. Ecclestone had long championed the service as the future of Formula 1 coverage, but he now looks set to concentrate on the free-to-view terrestrial programmes.

The news will come as a boost to ITV, who will now have access to many of the features previously available only to digital viewers, such as extra on-board cameras.

However, the Daily Mail reports that Ecclestone is unlikely to be left too much out of pocket by the failed venture. Although the newspaper reckons the venture has cost £75 million since it started in 1997, it claims most of the costs were carried by French TV company Canal Plus and German broadcaster DF1.

Bernie Ecclestone's digital TV facility is to replace local broadcasters in supplying pictures to all terrestrial broadcasters, the Formula 1 boss has told BBC Sport Online.

In the past, the production of the terrestrial feed has been left to the host broadcaster of the country in which the grand prix takes place. This has led to frequent criticism of the quality of the coverage, which often focuses on race leaders or local drivers.

The digital TV service demonstrated the potential of the new approach at last year's United States Grand Prix, when it produced the terrestrial coverage in place of American TV channel CBS. The improved coverage, featuring new graphics and extra on-board camera shots, was well received by both terrestrial broadcasters and viewers.

However, Ecclestone has denied reports that he has already decided to axe pay-per-view coverage of F1 races, saying the future of the service is still "up in the air."

Ecclestone's digital dream is officially over

Bernie Ecclestone has officially announced that he is discontinuing his pay-per-view digital television service, ending speculation on the future of the product.

As expected, the move will provide a boost to terrestrial broadcasters, who will now receive improved pictures and extra on-board camera footage to bolster their coverage.

In a statement, Ecclestone said: "We have told all of our broadcast partners that FOM will no longer offer a separate digital pay-per-view service. Over the last six years we have developed very sophisticated outside broadcast facilities and we now intend to focus these resources on providing the best live feed to our free-to-air broadcasters."

The Formula 1 bosses digital television service has been running in Europe since 1995, but only started broadcasting in the UK on Sky Digital this year. Ecclestone had high hopes for the multi-channel service, but it has struggled to attract viewers.

The promise of dramatically improved terrestrial TV coverage of Formula 1 next season has suffered a setback after Bernie Ecclestone failed in his bid to secure the host broadcasting rights for next year's races.

After the collapse of his digital TV project, Ecclestone turned his attention to improving the quality of the 'free-to-air' transmissions. A key element in this was taking control away from local television directors, who have been criticised in the past for concentrating too much on local drivers.

Ecclestone's failure to secure the rights has had the knock-on effect of mass redundancies at his Formula One Management operation, which is based at Biggin Hill. More than 300 staff have been put on paid leave, and it is thought that around 70 percent of these will be made redundant.

It remains to be seen what impact the redundancies will have on plans to introduce features from the digital 'supersignal' such as on-board cameras and greater angles into the terrestrial feed stations such as ITV receive.

Toch worden er overal herstructureringen doorgevoerd. Vaak kan dit zonder dat de kwaliteit eronder gaat leiden door de efficiency van het bestaande personeel te verhogen.
