... is momenteel nog onzeker. Villeneuve vreest dat hij vervangen zal worden door de Japanese testrijder en voormalig Jordan-piloot Takuma Sato. De Canadees heeft nog geen voorstel gekregen, noch van Bar noch van een ander team. Het ziet er naar uit dat hij z'n looneisen flink zal moeten inkrimpen.

Former world champion Jacques Villeneuve admits his days as a Formula One driver could be over after revealing he has had no offers of a drive for 2004. The 32-year-old Canadian, who races for BAR, believes the team's engine suppliers Honda, are pushing to have Japanese test driver and former Jordan racer Takuma Sato in the car next year.

Villeneuve said: "There is no inkling of an offer coming from anywhere and there hasn't been an offer from BAR either. It is late and there is no good news so there is no reason to be optimistic. I am working hard on it and I know a lot of people are working hard on it but there are also people working hard against it."

Villeneuve equalled his season's best result with sixth place in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, but he knows that will not influence the battle within the team over his future.

"No decision has been officially taken by the team and it doesn't look too good but that doesn't mean it is finished," he continued.

"It is out of my hands though, it is in (BAR sponsors) Lucky Strike's hands, in the team's hands and in Honda's hands. I guess it depends on who wins the battle but there is a big push for Sato coming from Honda."

The Monaco-based racer, who joined the team when it was set up by his manager Craig Pollock five years ago, would have to accept a massive pay-cut to stay, but admits he is frustrated he can no longer decide his own future.

"This just makes me lose faith in the paddock because no decision is taken with reality in mind, it is completely lunatic. It is like a dream world where everybody does their own thing without any logic. It doesn't matter what you achieve, people will see what they want. If they are positive with you they will see the one good thing you have done in 10 years, but if they want to be against you they will see the one bad thing you have done even if the rest of the time you have been doing good things. You want to finish on a high note or because you are not good enough anymore, not because people have decided to go against you for reasons that you cannot fight. If you are not on the pace or not doing your job then they are good reasons but if they are being invented, there is nothing you can personally do and it is frustrating if it is not in your hands."

spijtig, maar misschien te duur. Hopelijk kan hij blijven.

't zal wel zo'n vaart niet lopen, zeker na dit weekend waar hij toch een knappe prestatie heeft neergezet. Villeneuve is een beetje 'uitgedoofd' door die vreselijk onbetrouwbare BAR.
Een wereldkampioen inruilen voor een Sato die nagenoeg niets bewezen heeft bij Jordan, vind ik een twijfelachtige beslissing.

Vandaag kreeg het verhaal een vervolg. David Richards zou aan de Britse pers verteld hebben dat Villeneuve iets aan z'n houding moet doen. Jacques kwaad natuurlijk:

"I have never worked so hard in my life. If my attitude is a problem then there is no attitude change that could convince David."

En op www.motorsport.com staat te lezen dat BAR overweegt deze winter een soort battle te organiseren om te bepalen wie in 2004 het zitje naast Jenson Button krijgt.
Acht rijders zouden kunnen deelnemen. Villeneuve mag ook meedoen, als ie al wil natuurlijk.
Uiteraard zullen de stuurmanskunst en de conditie getest worden, maar de piloten zouden ook moeten bewijzen dat ze kunnen omgaan met pr-verplichtingen. Volgens Richards kwamen ze op het idee toen Buttons vriendin Louise Griffiths deelnam aan de tv-show Fame Academy. Ook daarin moeten de kandidaten de jury zien te imponeren vooraleer ze naar de finale kunnen doorstoten.


Toen ik dit artikel voor het eerst las, dacht ik dat het een grapje was. Bij nader inzien klonk het iets aannemelijker, maar toch blijf ik het bizar vinden. Op dat niveau hebben ze toch geen wedstrijden nodig om te beslissen wie het zitje krijgt? En dan die verwijzing naar Fame Academy...
Ik denk dat ze bij BAR allang weten wat er volgend jaar gebeurt en is dit niet meer dan een zoethoudertje voor de pers...

Neen, je hebt twee identieke rijders qua snelheid, race-vaardigheid e.d. Echter de een is een complete hork in de pers (denk aan het type Verstappen ) de ander is een goedlachse en goedgebekte gozer (type Webber). Wie kiest u?

Het ziet er niet al te goed uit voor Villeneuve. Honda heeft een supergrote invloed op het team, is namelijk veruit de grootste sponsor (+-8 miljard BEF/jaar!) + ze leveren natuurlijk motoren en helpen om het chassis te ontwikkelen. En zoals iedereen al weet willen die jappe Sato (=brokkenrijder!) in het team En voor de rest zijn er niet veel opties voor JV

Ik hoop dat hij toch nog kan blijven of ergens anders een goed zitje kan versieren, hij is t? goed om nu al te moeten stoppen met F1

former world champion Jacques Villeneuve was facing the end of his Formula One career on Saturday after his manager Craig Pollock claimed that the Canadian had been dropped from the BAR-Honda team.

"We received a call from BAR Managing Director, Dave Richards, on Friday evening informing us of their decision," said Pollock. "What is so disappointing is the fact that this team was built for and around Jacques, and he underwent all sorts of trials and tribulations over the years as BAR struggled to find its place in Formula One. Jacques never wavered, and his loyalty to British American Racing was constant. He had other opportunities, and no one would have blamed him for going elsewhere, but he preferred to see this project through despite a car that did not live up to its expectations."

Pollock said that he wasn't sure if Villeneuve, the 1997 world champion, would take part in the final race of the season in Japan on October 11. It has been widely reported that the team's test driver Takuma Sato is poised to inherit the seat with huge pressure being applied by Honda for a Japanese driver to feature again in the championship.

Pollock added that Villeneuve, who has had a miserable season lying in 16th place with just six points in the drivers' championship, will now consider his options for the future over the coming days.

Villeneuve volgend jaar niet in een BAR, daar zijn we al zeker van. Volgende week misschien ook al niet, want Sato staat klaar om zijn thuisrace mee te rijden.
Rijdt Villeneuve volgend jaar nog wel F1...

Bij deze een dikke foei aan BAR. Dat ze eerst die verdomde Honda-motor maar eens wat betrouwbaarder maken.

Het zou echt wel spijtig zijn mocht Villeneuve verdwijnen uit de F1.
Mocht Montoya toch nog naar McLaren gaan, dan komt er een stoeltje vrij bij Williams, ... waar ze dan, volgens mij, beter voor Villeneuve kiezen dan voor DC.
