Fisichella krijgt erkenning

Giancarlo Fisichella was just one of the many F1 celebrities attending this year's Formula One Awards at the 2003 Grand Prix Party last night, and by the end of the night, the Jordan driver walked away with the inaugural ‘Driver's Driver' award. The new category gave the drivers and test drivers from last season the chance to vote for their personal favourite driver and the Italian driver won hands down.

Michael Schumacher didn't go unrecognised either, the Ferrari star voted the ‘Best driver of 2002' by a panel of judges for his performances last season. New Jaguar driver, Mark Webber, the third of the three drivers awarded, received the title of ‘Best newcomer' after scoring two world championship points for Minardi in the 2002 season opener as well as a superb drive in the Monaco GP.

David Coulthard may not have won any prizes this year but the Scot was on hand to award his boss, Ron Dennis, with the ‘Life Time Achievement' Award while former ITV commentator, Murray Walker awarded the `Outstanding Contribution in 2002' award to Race Director Charlie Whiting.

The Awards, which were held at the NEC Arena, Birmingham, are in aid of Professor Sid Watkin's Brain and Spine Foundation and raised over $400,000 before it even began.

Talent dat altijd op de verkeerde plaats terechtkomt, een veel voorkomend verhaal. Ik heb altijd veel sympathie gehad voor deze italiaan, schuif een Ferrari of Williams onder zijn achterste en een eerste overwinning is niet ver weg meer. Maar momenteel zit hij vast in een Jordan, een team dat serieus in financiële problemen zit met een middenmootwagen zonder noemenswaardige sponsors. DHL geeft er de brui aan (na 1 jaar), Bensons&Hedges lijkt te willen betalen met de komst van Iers coureur Eddie Irvine.

Maar wat GC betreft: Dit jaar wordt het jaar om eens extra knap te presteren en een plaatsje bij Ferrari te versieren. Misschien als opvolger van Rubens, of wie weet zelfs Michael ? Een Italiaan in hét Italiaanse team, 't zou nog eens mooi zijn.
