Tom Walkinshaw overleden

Toen we nog niet zoveel wisten van de autosport eind jaren tachtig/begin negentig was Walkinshaw een persoon met een grote uitstraling. Daar bleef uiteindelijk weinig van over, het was wel een boefje. Echter zo'n overlijden verdiend niemand.

Tom Walkinshaw moest de autosport inderdaad langs een achterpoortje verlaten.

Toch zal hij voor mij altijd een grote mijnheer blijven. Een man met een rijkgevulde autosportcarrière in verschillende disciplines; zowel als piloot en als teammanager. De mooiste herinneringen aan 'Major Tom' blijven voor mij zijn exploten als piloot in de endurance-toerwagenraces, met onder andere de Hermetite-Ford Capri, de Mazda RX-7 (overwinning in Francorchamps 1981), de Jaguar XJS (overwinning in Francorchamps 1984) en de Bastos-Rover 3500.

Daarnaast zullen ook nog zijn Le Mans-successen als TWR-teambaas met de Jaguars (1988 en 1990) en de Porsche (1997) me altijd bijblijven.

Dankjewel Tom Walkinshaw voor al die mooie momenten!

Grote naam inderdaad. Voor mij vooral vanwege Volvo BTCC en Jaguar Group C, al heb ik die laatste niet bewust meegemaakt. Maar zoals gezegd ook een boefje die het niet zo nauw nam met de regels, al heeft dat ook weer z'n charme. Hier ook nog een artikeltje:

Ja, al was hij natuurlijk nog steeds erg succesvol met het Holden fabrieksteam in V8 Supercars.

Vandaag kwam het bericht dat John Anderson op 65 jarige leeftijd overleden is. Het grootste deel van zijn loopbaan speelde zich af in de US alstechnisch verantwoordelijke (CanAm, Indy, ALMS met Acura), maar hij was nu vooral bekent als één van de drijvende krachten achter het mislukte USF1 project.
