incident Lister - Viper

Tjonge jonge...

JAMIE AND NATHAN WIN AGAIN ……but

Unusually, the early morning warm-up was dramatic for the number 15 Storm – the Menx Ferrari cutting the track and slamming straight into the rear corner of the car while David Sterckx was at the wheel – the team did their usual professional job to repair the damaged car in the hour before it had to go on to the grid.

Firstly, the race for the number 15 Storm of Andrea and David – from the start Andrea was stuck behind the number 4 Force One Viper of Phillipe Alliot; we all knew that it would be nearly impossible to pass these cars as their straight line speed was so good this weekend. Andrea found it totally impossible to pass due also to the fact that gravel and stones were being thrown up by the Viper crossing the kerbs, laying clouds of dust and gravel on the track and causing the Storm to understeer on the slippery surface. Just after the hour, Andrea came in to hand over to David – when David left the pits there was a pool of water where the car had been – at first David reported no problem so continued but then saw the water temperature was rising and came back to the pits after half an hour. There was a hole in the radiator which had been caused by the stones in the gravel that had been thrown up in front of Andrea during the first hour. They were out of the race and Andrea’s chance of the Championship gone.

Meanwhile, Jamie had made an excellent start in the 14 Storm moving up to 4th straight away by maintaining his position at the first corner although he was pushed into the dirt by the Alliot Viper. He then went on to pass Erdos in the Saleen to take third position and for the remainder of his hour had a good race with Mike Hezemen’s in the number 5 Viper. To the pits to hand over to Nathan on the hour; an excellent stop by the team taking approximately 10 seconds out of the Konrad Saleen’s lead and putting Nathan on track ahead of Kumpen who was in the 5 Viper. Nathan once again drove well eventually taking the lead when one of the Konrad Saleen’s wheels came loose and it had to make an unscheduled stop. Another excellent stop by the Lister team put Jamie back on track, in the lead and about 28 seconds ahead of the second car, the Ferrari of Biagi and Bobbi and nearly a lap ahead of the third placed car, Alliot’s 4 Viper.

Jamie maintained and extended his lead over the Ferrari putting no pressure on himself or the Storm. He came up to lap Alliot who moved over at the beginning of the pit straight. Towards the end of the straight Jamie had to move slightly to the left to avoid a large piece of debris on the track, he could not see Alliot beside him or in his mirrors so assumed he was in the blackspot just behind - fractions of a second later he felt the contact (Alliot’s front touching the Storm near the rear tyre). Jamie corrected the Storm but Alliot’s Viper turned violently sideways into the pit wall – a massive accident for the Viper

With about 20 minutes to go the safety car was brought out and when the race resumed the gap between Jamie and the Bobbi/Biagi Ferrari was down to just over 5 seconds. However, he had extended this lead to 23 seconds when he took the chequered flag.

A fantastic win by Jamie and Nathan following their win at Anderstorp and an excellent result for the Creation Autosportif car of Bobby Verdon Roe and Marco Zadra who finished 3rd on track.

Following the race the stewards excluded the number 14 car from the results due to the Alliot accident – we are appealing this decision.
