Waarom investeren vele constructeurs zo fors in F1? Uiteraard voor de publiciteit maar zeker ook voor het technologisch aspect: het uitvinden en ontwikkelen van nieuwe technologiën, materiëlen,... om hun WEG-auto's te verbeteren veiliger te maken. Om nog maar te zwijgen over de uitdaging die F1 is voor de werknemers van de constructeur en de bijhorende motivatie... Als je die uitdaging en zoektocht naar nieuwigheden wegneemt, neem je de magische aantrekkingskracht uit de formule 1 weg... [/B]

The GPWC is made up of representatives from BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Ferrari, Ford and Renault, with the aim of establishing a rival to F1 in 2008. Its board met on Thursday, after which it released a statement heavily criticising the FIA's stance on reducing the use of driver aids such as traction and launch control during the 2003 season.

The statement read: "The manufacturers are in favour of reducing costs, but Formula 1 needs to keep its fundamental characteristic that it is a showcase for the highest level of technology, a place where the most advanced research is applied. It is also important that any change to the rules be established with sufficient advance notice knowing also that any change whatsoever inevitably increases cost, at least in the short term..........

Als ze zo blijven doorgaan vind ik deze klasse z'n "1" niet meer waardig.

Problemen met digitale televisie, schrappen van Francorchamps, oprichting van een "breakaway series", teams die verdwijnen, drastische regelveranderingen voor 2003, 2004 en 2005, Hockenheim dat slechts een schim is van wat het geweest is, ... .

Op deze wijze gaat deze klasse CART achterna. De "Breakaway Series" zou wel eens de europese vorm van de IRL kunnen gaan worden.

En dan nog die rotzooi met GPs in Bahrain, China, Rusland, ... . Ik vind dat de klasse zich steeds meer vervreemd van z'n doelpubliek. Het seizoen begon immers toch wanneer de teams aankwamen in Europa, niet? Als we zo doorgaan mogen we van geluk spreken als een aantal van de races nog in Europa doorgaat.

Op dit ogenblik stroomt er nog geen adrenaline door m'n aderen omwille van het nakende seizoensbegin. Ik hoop dat het toch nog op gang gaat komen!

FIA offering million-dollar reward
For proof of cheating teams

According to latest reports, the FIA is planning to offer a reward for any information that a team in the Formula one series is cheating once the new regulations governing the ban of electronic devises in the series comes into effect. They are said to be offering a reward of a million dollars to any one reporting infringements on the new rules as part of their determination to take a tough stance on the issue.

The reason electronic aids such as launch control and traction control were reintroduced from the 2002 Spanish Grand Prix was that they were said to be too hard for the FIA to police adequately. Allegations were constantly being thrown around pit lane regarding various teams illegally using the systems, however they could never be proven.

So, to make it fair to the teams not using the devices, hence certain teams gaining an advantage, the FIA allowed the systems back into play. But now, due to all the uproar in the 2001 season that saw declining TV audiences as fans turned away from the series, the sports governing body has decided to remove all electronic assistance once and for all and the promised reward is added incentive to make sure it stays away, once and for all.

While it is looking increasingly as if they will remain in play this year, as most of the new cars already have the systems on board, the FIA are determined that 2004 will be run electronically Unassisted. As well as the million dollar reward, there will also be heavy fines for anyone caught using the aids illegally.

“Driver aids cannot be used from 2004 but we are becoming increasingly sceptical of the teams' inability to switch off all launch control and other driver aids for the 2003 season," a source from the FIA told Reuters newsagency. "We are considering very heavy fines for any team found to be using illegal systems. And, in addition to our own technical inspections, we are also considering a $1 million reward for the receipt of any information, which will lead to the conviction of a team found to be acting illegally. The FIA has already made it clear that we intend to work on a zero-tolerance basis."

Weer een verkeerde zet!

Ik geef toe, in de Formule 1 bestaat er niet zoiets als een teamgeest, maar door deze beloningen te gaan uitkeren, creëer je wel een heksenjacht.

Het gaat van kwaad naar erger en ik vrees dat we het laatste nog niet gezien hebben.
Men zou terug rust moeten brengen in de Formule 1, maar dat lijkt Mosley niet begrepen te hebben!

Nu wordt het wel te gek....straks krijgen we teamtoestanden waarin een werknemer van het team X naar de Fia stapt om zijn werkgever te 'verklikken' of om Team Y een loer te draaien, waarop de FIA deze aanklacht serieus zal moeten nemen en de hele rotzooi zal gaan moeten onderzoeken, resulterend in een zwaar verziekte sfeer en belachelijk tijdverlies. Is dit nog een sport of een spionagehandel ?

De FIA was al zot en nu is t compleet, stuurt ze naar een zottenhuis. Die maatregelen, ok, maar op een beter tijdstip. Die boetes. Echt geen goed gedacht. Het gaat de situatie echt niet verbeteren.

The Formula 1 Technical Working Group has today (Tuesday) clarified and approved the sweeping proposals put forward by the sport's governing body, the FIA, to this year's World Championship. Traction control and automatic gearboxes will now be banned in time for this year's British Grand Prix on July 20.
The meeting, chaired by FIA technical delegate Charlie Whiting, has rubberstamped an altered version of the raft of changes demanded by FIA president Max Mosley last week. A first meeting last Friday was reconvened today after some teams balked at the sudden implementation of banning all driver aids.

Agreement was reached this time, however, with a number of changes being adopted. The main sticking point was the immediate introduction of total ban on traction control, but the five-month stay of execution will allow teams leeway to disable their systems. Launch control will also be banned from that point, provided the teams can operate their current clutches manually.
Car-to-pit telemetry will be allowed in 2003, as will driver-to-pit radios - but the latter will be accessible by host TV broadcasters via a specified frequency. Both had been banned as part of the FIA's previously announced changes for this year.

The rules on spare cars will also be relaxed , so that cars damaged in either qualifying or practice can be replaced. These will have to start at the back of the grid. Spare cars will also be available should there be a red flag in the opening two laps of a race.
