Alzen leaves works Mercedes team

DTM veteran parts with marque days before season-opener


DTM stalwart Uwe Alzen has surprisingly split from the works HWA Mercedes team, just days before the first race of this year's championship.

Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug said that the parting was a joint decision after a difference of opinion regarding the targets of Alzen and the manufacturer.

"We now have different opinions on the further development of Uwe's targets and ours," said Haug. "Therefore, we jointly agreed to go separate ways. Uwe is one of the really fast and talented drivers in touring car racing and we wish him all the best for his further career."

Alzen said: "I thank the AMG and HWA teams for the last two years in the DTM. However, I'd now like to aim for new targets in motorsport."

Christijan Albers will move over from the semi-works Rosberg team to fill Alzen's place at HWA. Mercedes has brought in Patrick Huismann to run for Rosberg at Hockenheim.

Alzen joined Mercedes from rival Opel in 2001. He finished runner-up in the championship that season, taking two victories. Last season, he claimed one win on his way to sixth place in the final standings

24/04 - Albers promoveert, Huisman terug.

Christijan Albers zal dit jaar niet in een 2002-specificatie Mercedes uitkomen in de DTM. Uwe Alzen en Team HWA hebben op het laatste moment besloten om hun samenwerking te beëindigen. Christijan Albers schuift hierdoor op naar het HWA Team waar hij dit seizoen in de 2003-specificatie zal rijden.

"Ik ben bijzonder blij met deze kans die Mercedes-Benz mij geeft. Ik heb het afgelopen jaar bij het team Rosberg zeer naar mijn zin gehad en hoop nu met de nieuwe auto bij HWA zo goed mogelijk te presteren," aldus Christijan.

Uwe Alzen wil zich elders met motorsport bezig gaan houden. "Ik wil het AMG-team en het HWA-team bedanken voor de afgelopen twee jaar in de DTM. Nu wil ik me echter opnieuw oriënteren op andere takken van de motorsport."

Nu Christijan Albers is opgeschoven naar Team HWA blijft er een plek over bij het team van Keke Rosberg. Deze plaats zal tijdens de eerste race op de Hockenheimring worden ingevuld door Patrick Huisman. Of Huisman ook de rest van het seizoen in de DTM zal rijden is nog niet bekend.
