DTM points leader Laurent Aiello, who only needs seven points to win the championship at Zandvoort in Holland today (Sunday) has had his pole position taken away due to a fuel irregularity which was discovered after qualifying and revealed overnightDTM points leader Laurent Aiello, who only needs seven points to win the championship at Zandvoort in Holland today (Sunday) has had his pole position taken away due to a fuel irregularity which was discovered after qualifying and revealed overnight.

Aiello's Abt Audi will not take part in the qualification race at Zandvoort, and will start the main event from the back of the grid. His Abt Sportsline team has admitted blame for the tainted fuel sample, and says traces of fuel from a test at EuroSpeedway Lausitz caused the anomaly.

"During the test at EuroSpeedway Lausitz we have been using fuel from the station over there," said Abt's technical boss Albert Deuring. "Apparently, little amounts that were left over have now mixed with the race fuel and thus caused the difference from the specification used in Zandvoort."

Team boss Hans-Jurgen Abt said: "Although we didn't get ourselves any advantage [from the different fuel] we accept the decision of the stewards."

Ironically, Abt claims that the racing fuel used for the Zandvoort DTM weekend is of a higher octane than the traces discovered in Aiello's tank.

Mercedes' Marcel Fassler, who won the previous round at the A1-Ring in Austria, will now start from pole position, with AMG colleague and title aspirant Bernd Schneider in sixth. Schneider needs to outscore Aiello by seven points to take the championship to the wire at Hockenheim next weekend..

Competitive penalty for Aiello because of polluted fuel DTM-points leader and title favourite Laurent Aiello will not be allowed to start today in the qualification race at the Circuit Park Zandvoort in The Netherlands (start 15.20 h). The stewards decided to declare void the lap times of the fastest driver from yesterday’s qualifying and moreover decided to impose a ban from the qualification race, because it was discovered during a fuel check on Saturday evening, that the fuel in Aiello’s Abt-Audi TT-R was not identical with the officially admitted fuel.

Starts from last place on the grid: Laurent Aiello
This means that Aiello will be allowed to start into the main race from last place on the grid. Saturday’s qualifying is decisive for the grid line-up for the qualification race. And finally, only the result of the qualification race decides on the line-up for the main race. The reason for the pollution of the fuel, the Team Abt Sportsline communicated, is probably rest fuel from test sessions that the Abt-team held at the Lausitzring last week.

The press release by the scrutineers in Zandvoort (September 28, 2002), reads as follows: “The times from qualifying of the car with the starting number 3 of Laurent Aiello were declared void and a ban from the qualification race was imposed. In a fuel check after qualifying, the fuel used was found to be not identical to the reference fuel from the fuel station as designated by the organiser of the event. (Art. S22 sporting regulations 2002). The decision was announced at 23.58 h and is valid.”
