B·A·R Honda confirms 2004 driver line-up

The following statement was issued by Lucky Strike BAR Honda at 1430 hours YST:

Lucky Strike B·A·R Honda today (Tuesday 7 October) announces that Takuma Sato will complete the 2004 driver line-up, alongside Jenson Button who enters his second year with the team. B·A·R have taken up their option on the 26-year-old Japanese, which will see him moving up from his current role as the team’s third driver.

Takuma’s first year in Formula One came courtesy of B·A·R when he tested for the team in 2001. He impressed the team with his speed that year, but with no race seat available for 2002, Takuma decided to accept an offer from Jordan to race for them and gain more experience. B·A·R retained a close interest in his progress and he returned to the team as third driver in 2003 with valuable experience under his belt, which he has consolidated with a year spent testing with the team.

David Richards, B·A·R Team Principal, said: “The team very much appreciates Jacques Villeneuve’s commitment over the past five years. However, as his contract with the team has come to an end, we believe this is the appropriate time to refresh the driver line-up.

“We welcome Takuma as Jenson’s team-mate for 2004. He has done an excellent job for us in testing this year and has confirmed our long-held belief that he has enormous potential. Takuma is widely regarded as a very fast driver and he has had a meteoric rise to Formula One. When he drove for Jordan in 2002 he had just four years’ prior racing experience and during that first season we saw flashes of brilliance, which he
underlined with an impressive performance in the Japanese Grand Prix last year. After a further year of testing with B·A·R in 2003, we firmly believe that he deserves the opportunity to translate his natural speed into consistent race performances.

“With Jenson moving into his fifth season in Formula One and his second with B·A·R, he will provide the counter-balance of experience alongside the fresh enthusiasm of Takuma. A young and hungry driver line-up is essential for us to move closer to achieving our Championship ambitions.”

A delighted Takuma Sato commented: “Of course, I am extremely happy to be confirmed as race driver for B·A·R next year. This is what I have been working hard all year to achieve and now that the decision is made I am looking forward to proving myself again in the team next year.

“A year out of racing has been tough for me, but I am confident that the work we have done this year in testing has been extremely valuable in helping me and the team become a strong partnership. I have built good relationships with many people in the team this year and feel very positive that together we can be successful next season. Now, of course, I can't wait to start the build-up to the Australian Grand Prix in March.”

Commenting on behalf of the team’s title sponsor Lucky Strike, Jimmi Rembiszewksi, Marketing Director for British American Tobacco, said: “We would like to pay tribute to Jacques Villeneuve’s determination to succeed over the past five years. He made a courageous decision to join B·A·R and put his career in the hands of the challenging and innovative individuals who founded the team. Takeo Kiuchi, Honda F1 Project Leader, said: “Everyone at Honda is looking forward to working with Takuma again next year. We have all been very impressed with the development work he has done this season and we are sure all that effort will be turned into race results next year. I would also like to offer my thanks to Jacques for his support over the four years that Honda has been with the team. We wish him every
success for the future.”

Spijtige zaak, voor het geld gekozen en niet voor de kwaliteit. . . Met alle respect voor Takuma, maar vorig jaar hebben we kunnen zien dat ie er niet veel van bakte, Oké, hij werd voor de leeuwen gesmeten, datiis waar. Wat heeft takuma dit jaar trouwens gedaan, buiten wat getest voor BAR ?

Heeft niks te maken met rijderskwaliteiten. Hij is gewoon de lieveling van Honda.

En Sato zal reeds dit weekend zijn eerste race voor BAR rijden. Jacques Villeneuve heeft beslist om niet te rijden aangezien hij voor volgend jaar aan de kant geschoven is.

Ik vind het vreemd dat Villeneuve nergens nog een zitje vindt voor 2004.
Hij is inderdaad nooit echt subtiel geweest als het aankwam op het geven van kritiek. Hij heeft daarbij een aantal mensen zwaar tegen de schenen gestampt, ... maar dat is nu juist ook de charme van Villeneuve. Je weet wat je aan hem hebt. Die man kan gewoon geen spelletjes spelen.

Villeneuve is wat mij betreft zeker een zitje waard bij Williams, Renault of Toyota. Spijtig genoeg zijn nu net al die plaatsen besproken.
Het enige echte alternatief lijkt me momenteel Sauber. Niet echt de top, ... maar als Jacques in de Formule 1 wil blijven, gaat hij nog een jaar extra op z'n tanden moeten bijten, en alles uit de kast moeten halen.

Ik hoop Villeneuve in 2004 terug te zien in de Formule 1. Niemand was zo spectaculair op de Raidillon als hij! 'T zou spijtig zijn.

Wijze beslissing van Villeneuve, al was het maar om een statement te maken.

Ik heb niks tegen Sato, maar die kerel heeft in z'n jaar Jordan niet veel laten zien, dachtikzo.
En Villeneuve is een ex-wereldkampioen, een talent dat verneukt is door een gebrekkig team, met een gebrekkige motor en een verkeerd management.
foei aan Richards, foei aan de Honda-bazen. 't Is te hopen dat het niet dezelfde richting opgaat met Button.

Ik hoop op Villeneuve - Jaguar voor 2004. Dat zou best wel eens vuurwerk kunnen geven.

Sato niet veel laten zien? Die zorgde in dat saaie seizoen toch nog een beetje voor sensatie. Op een voor hem ietwat niet-leuke manier weliswaar.

Ik vond toch dat Takuma Sato een mooie race gereden heeft in Suzuka vorig jaar!!! Als hij dit jaar even sterk rijdt zal Button zich mogen reppen.

Inderdaad(*), ik was ook bijzonder onder de indruk van zijn prestaties in de Lotus 49B tijdens de Classic races in Monaco 2002. Monaco meister Graham Hill heeft het er in dezelfde auto ook niet zonder schade afgebracht en toen was het droog en stonden de vleugels er wel op!

Hopelijk hebben ze bij BAR genoeg reservestukken bij dit weekend .. T.S. heeft vorig jaar genoeg wagen in de prak gereden :D

JV 'Asisted' In His Decision Not To Race At Suzuka

Villeneuve didn't choose not to race at the season ending race at Suzuka.
Contrary to previous reports, our sources indicate that Jacques was encouraged to pull out of the race in order to make room for local favorite Takuma Sato.
Last year, Sato drove a Jordan to a surprising fifth place in the Japanese Grand Prix. BAR management is indicated to be responsible for the move in order to please a faction within Honda that want Sato in the car.
Sato has been chosen to drive for BAR next season.
It seems unlikely that Jacques would have chosen not to race in what is possibly his last F1 race and it would be a shame to have to say goodbye to Jacques under these circumstances.

Ik kan begrijpen dat je ontgoocheld bent omdat JV zijn contract bij BAR niet verlengd is .... Dit geeft je echter geen recht om te gaan schelden op TS en Dave Richards

Sato was duidelijk sneller dan Button in de eerste kwalificatie, bravo.
