Freddy Loix made a cautious start to the event but picked up speed quickly after making changes to the set-up of the Accent WRC³ and then continued to set a string of top ten stage times. “This afternoon has not been too bad and after our short Monte Carlo we are learning a few things about the handling,” said Loix. “We will start tomorrow with a much better car than today because we are making a number of changes that will help us, particularly in the fast corners. I’m not too happy about our road position tomorrow as we will be running too near the front so I would prefer no snow and lots of ice. But on this event there are new stages and we seem to be able to go better on new stages so I will try my hardest to make the most of that tomorrow.”

Freddy Loix said: “The car is not great, but that’s the trouble with not
having any testing. It’s not catastrophic, but things could be better. Our
first test was at the shakedown, and our base settings were from Australia
last year, this doesn’t help. Taking that into consideration, I pleased
with the times which we are settings. There are people behind me who have
spent a lot of time testing.”

Stage 8 stopped
Stage has been stopped and an ambulance has been sent in, believed to be in connection with an accident involving Rovanpera and Pykalisto. Rovanpera is definately out with broken suspension. More details when known....

Another Swedish Rally stage has been stopped after an accident in SS8, Fredriskberg. Young Finn Juuso Pykalisto rolled his privateer Peugeot 206, which was then hit by Harri Rovanpera's works 206.

Early reports suggest that there are no serious injuries, though Pykalisto was said to be shocked and receiving medical attention. He has been taken out of the car, placed in a neck brace as a precaution and taken to hospital .

Richard Burns, who was next on the scene on the Fredriksberg stage, said he thought Rovanpera had not been slowed by spectators or marshals before the accident. He also said the two cars were 'broken'.

The start of SS9 has been delayed by around 20 minutes.

Freddy Loix and Sven Smeets had a mixed day and a progrssive morning was flattened somewhat by a difficult afternoon. They made changes to the suspension set-up of their Accent WRC³ at the start of the leg in preparation for the 43.69km Granberget stage. Preferring the settings with which he finished leg 1 however, Loix reverted to that set-up before leaving service for the following group of two stages.

The Belgian climbed to seventh position by special stage eight but Colin McRae (Citroen) powered his way back from an overnight position of 13th to steal Freddy’s seventh position from him. Admitting to a few bad decisions on the afternoon’s set of stages, the Belgian found it difficult to set competitive times but confidently defended his ninth position nonetheless.

Freddy said: “I made a big mistake on tyre choice this afternoon, especially for the last two stages and I also made a mistake by putting the corner lights on – whenever we touched a snow bank it just took so much speed off the car.”

Looking ahead to the final day of the event, Freddy added: “I’m not going to make any major changes this evening. The handling is ok but I will be worried if the conditions get worse – if the gravel comes through, our lack of power will be a handicap. The best thing for us will be a hard frost but we’ll give it all we have tomorrow anyway.”
