mazda sportscar ?

November 24, 2002. Buttonwillow Raceway Park. Making its official competitive debut at the Pacific Night Enduro for closed wheel cars at Buttonwillow Raceway Park, the new Mazda Sports Racer dominated the event, capturing the pole position and victory by an eleven-lap margin in the four-hour race.

Covering 345 miles in the course of the four-hour event, the Mazda Sports Racer was put to the test by Star Mazda West Coast Championship runner-up Mike Anderson, former Star Mazda Champion Mark Rodrigues, and Star Mazda race winner Michael Potekhen, coming through with flying colors each time.

“The Mazda Sports Racer worked perfectly,” Rodrigues commented as he described his turn behind the wheel, which included setting the fast race lap on lap 75 of the event. “With that street port 13B Mazda Rotary putting out 230 horsepower it was as close as you could get to an Atlantic car without driving one.”

Rodrigues’ references to the Atlantic were appropriate as fellow driver Potekhen set an unofficial lap record for the ASR class during his pole position effort in qualifying, setting a time of 1:45.420, second only to an Atlantic car for the overall track record around the 2.64 mile course. “Claiming the pole position is always a great feeling,” Potekhen explained, “but capturing the pole on the car’s debut feels even better.
