Zanardi in ETCC?
Het lijkt er in ieder geval sterk op:
Zanardi tested for Ravaglia ETCC 16/07/03 Yesterday, in Misano Adriatico, Alessandro Zanardi drove a Ravaglia Motorsport BMW 320i. The Italian driver, who lost both his legs in an awful crash during a Champ Car race in Oschersleben on 15th September 2001, completed 27 laps of the racetrack near Riccione, including a 14-lap sequence, which is equivalent to the FIA ETCC normal race distance. At the wheel of the team’s third car, modified with a system built by Faidel for disabled drivers, Zanardi clocked his fastest lap in 1:42.90, which was 3.5 seconds slower than Fabrizio Giovanardi’s 1:39.43. Although it has to point out that the latter completed 60 laps in the 2003 car, while Zanardi was driving a 2001 former Super Production machine, upgraded to Super 2000 specs. “Times were not my priority;” Zanardi said. “We were rather focusing on setting the Faidel system up, in order to give me total control on the car. We have planned more tests and only when I will feel confident I will be looking for the lap times. My goal is to reduce the gap from Giovanardi to two tenths.” Before going to Misano, Zanardi had already drove the car in Adria for a few laps; he will be back in the BMW at Adria on August 28th. If this test will be positive, Zanardi might take the wheel of a third Ravaglia Motorsport car on the final meeting of the 2003 FIA European Touring Car Championship, to be held in Monza on October 19th. Toch even off-topic gaan om te zeggen dat er illustere voorgangers bestaan die deze prestatie "toppen" : Douglas Bader slaagde er in WWII in om -eveneens zonder benen- als Spitfire-piloot 23 overwinningen te behalen in "dogfights". En het strafste van al : toen hij in 1941 boven Frankrijk neergehaald werd en zijn beide beenprotheses zwaar beschadigd raakten, slaagde hij er toch in om (met de hulp van een Franse verpleegster) te ontsnappen van de Duitsers! Jammer genoeg werd hij alsnog opgepakt toen hij trachtte zich te verschuilen in een Franse boerderij, en werd hij naar Colditz gebracht, het gevangenenkamp voor de "zware gevallen". Daar werd hij op het einde van de oorlog bevrijd...

Akkoord, Sennake, maar binnen de autosport is dit toch wel een unieke prestatie. Clay Regazzoni, heeft na zijn crash op Long Beach, waarbij hij een blijvende verlamming opliep, nog aan GT-races deelgenomen. Maar wat Zanardi presteert, is toch nog een stuk straffer.
PS : Naar het schijnt zou Formule 3000-piloot Jason Watt, ook verlamd na een motorongeval, in Denemarken opnieuw met toerwagens racen.

In de minicup rijdt een man met één been en zijn naam is Arnaud van Schevensteen. Die heeft ook al de Mont Blanc beklommen en reedt samen met koen wauters op een BMW de 24 uren van Francorchamps en het eerste jaar bij de GT's reed hij op een Lamborghini.

Om op hetzelfde thema nog even door te gaan. Remember Alessandro Nannini. De man verloor bij een helicopterongeval een onderarm. De chirurgen konden die er terug aanhechten en ....... enkele jaren later reed Nannini met een fabrieks-Alfa in de voorste gelederen van de DTM.

Ja idd, echte sportlui, echte doorzetters. Dat zie je nie vaak!
Zanardi gaat dus het zelfde doen als Watt. Tis alleen dat het aanpassen van de auto, en daaraan je stijl aanpassen, wel even gaat duren.
