Mosley's power cut

Mosley's power cut

Max Mosley has revealed radical plans to cut the costs of Formula 1 by reducing teams to just one engine per car.

Teams are currently allowed to use as many engines as they like every weekend, often switching power units between qualifying and the race.

Under the new plans, they would only be allowed one engine per weekend. If a driver suffers a failure and the engine has to be changed, he would have to start from the back of the grid.

Mosley said the move would also make the sport more entertaining.

He told the BBC: "Limiting the number of engines is one way of cutting down on the costs but not on the spectacle of Formula 1.

"Every now and again you get the leader of the championship starting from the back of the grid. When that has happened in the past because of rain or something that has improved the race."

Mosley is hoping the cost-cutting measure will ensure that there is no repeat of Prost’s demise last month.

He said: "There is no doubt money is going to be tighter in Formula 1. But there are lots of economies teams can make before they have to pack up.

"I think there are other teams with financial problems, and lots of them are having great difficulty putting together a budget to be reasonably competitive.

"But that has always been the case in Formula 1, and I do not think any of them are in a position where they will go out of business this year."

Mosley added that the FIA had already received enquiries from parties interested in taking Prost’s slot on the F1 grid in 2003. He said it was still possible for Prost to race this year if the company was bought soon.

Mosley seeking appeal change

Teams could lose the right to appeal, if new proposals take shape.

FIA President Max Mosley believes that the power of appeal should shift to the Race Director to stop the teams appealing as a matter of routine.

Teams would retain the right to appeal at the FIA International Court of Appeal but would be less inclined to if the matter had already been considered.

The move would act to streamline the current system that sees a number of drawn out cases.

Another initiative will see all FIA stewards remaining at the race-track for post-race meetings.

This is aimed at preventing incidents like that at last year’s US GP whereby Jordan got away with a technical infringement as a result of a steward leaving the circuit early.
